Fall session of district court opens with grand jury empaneled. No major crimes reported. hot checkings and cattle thefts on rise. Some non contested divorce cases disposed. others settled or transferred. Three contested civil cases set for next week. jury to be used later. Grand jury foreman W A Morgan and members named.
Mrs. J B Arthur 85 longtime Comanche County resident died Sunday at the local hospital after several weeks illness. Funeral at First Methodist Church with Rev Urban Schulze and Rev J D Smoot officiating. Survived by six children including O L Arthur Gustine and J E Arthur Ballinger with one son Lewis Arthur deceased. She helped organize White Point Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for years.
Paul Whitton announces Bettie Stuart as Home Counselor for Comanche County Veterans Vocational Schools. Stuart, a BS graduate from Texas Technological College, brings ten years as Home Supervisor in adult education. The program aims to help veterans and their wives establish homes and gain economic, emotional, and social stability through homemaking sessions in community meetings.
Comanche and De Leon representatives Mrs Roy J Peace and Mrs C E Atchison attended the Texas Home Demonstration Association gathering in Galveston. The meeting drew 677 delegates with talks on home making lights and a pin featuring T H D A on a Texas map.
Mr and Mrs Horace Smith have again bought the Wayside Inn on the De Leon Highway and will reopen for business Monday. The couple previously owned the inn and now resume operations with plans to resume services.
Diggs Tractor Company hosts an all day open house Saturday from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. at its new 50 by 150 foot showroom and 75 by 150 foot lot location on 217 Northie St. in Comanche. J C Biggs, owner, moves from Dallas and remodels the Clemons Motor Company building to showcase Ford tractors and Dearborn farm machinery with representatives from state headquarters expected. The firm lists family and staff including Gerald Crooks Jack Bratton Curley Berna Dale Biggs and Johnny Davis. Refreshments favors and door prizes will be given.
Rexall winners receive a world trip valued at over 14,000 dollars for two weeks with stops in London Paris Istanbul Manila and Honolulu plus alternates of 5000 and 2500 and 1000 dollars. The contest is open to all U S residents and requires a 50 word sentence about Rexall products. Entry blanks available at Durham's Pharmacy Comanche Rexall Store.
Comanche FFA member Spruill won grand champion Shorthorn steer at Dallas fair with calf bred by Roonce Bros of De Leon. Milton Caraway of Comyn 4-H took reserve with his Shorthorn calf from Cara way herd. Comanche Sid ney De Leon FFA and about six 4-H clubs attended. 46 000 club boys fed in under an hour.
Iva Lou Foster an 18 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs George P Foster died after being run over in a Clyde area driveway. The child was playing in the yard with her brother Gene when she ran toward the car and was struck by Mr Foster who did not realize the accident until his son yelled. She died ten minutes after arrival at Baird hospital. Survived by parents two brothers a half brother maternal grandparents and several relatives including attendees from Comanche and Sidney areas. Funeral services attended by extended family from Comanche Sidney Sipe Springs and Abilene.
Bobby Joe Flinchum a fourth year student under Miss Beulah Stark earned state recognition for a prize winning Fire Prevention poster sent to the State Fire Insurance Division. It was judged among the best from hundreds of submissions and gained wide acclaim.
Mrs. Annie C. Snodgrass 71 of Comanche died October 2 in a Houston hospital after a month’s illness. Funeral services were at Comanche Funeral Home with Rev. S. J. Isham overseeing. Burial followed in Old Dublin Cemetery. She and her husband moved from Dublin six years ago. Survived by children Tom, Des Grayson, Mrs. Charles Morgan, Mrs. Earl Cheney, Eat Snodgrass, Buster, Mrs. James Hughes, and Spencer Snodgrass. A daughter Margaret died earlier. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
Charles W Springstead died at his home six miles east of Comanche on September 25 after a prolonged illness. Funeral services were at Comanche Funeral Home with Rev W S Clark officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery. A Johnson County native, he homesteaded in New Mexico and worked as a street car conductor in Los Angeles before settling in Comanche County in 1930. He married Hazel Faulkner on December 21 1937 and survived by his wife, a brother Luke Springstead of Comanche, and four sisters Eva Dockey of Keene May Smith Vivian Fox of Bowie and Lydia Howell of Arkansas. He was converted at age 18.
C C Gilchrest Carl Campbell Gilchrest formerly of Comanche County died at a Las Vegas Nevada hospital September 25 Funeral services were held in Phoenix Arizona where he had lived for years He is survived by his wife Mae of Phoenix his mother Mrs Jennie Gilchest of Comanche five sisters and five brothers including Coleman Gilchrest Monahans Allen Gilchrest Van Callie Gilchrest Crawford Mack Gilchrest Dallas and Ernest Gilchrest Dallas
A. P. Burks and son Harold will continue as Comanche agents for Johnson Transport Company, Inc. after John Motor Lines transfers to Santa Fe Railway around October 15. Johnson Transport, a separate corporation, has served Co manche with interstate and intrastate common carrier service since 1934, operating daily schedules to Dallas, Fort Worth, Waco, San Antonio, Stephenville, De Leon, Brownwood, and Cisco.
In a hard fought conference game the Comanche Indians defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs 6 to 0 before about 2 000 fans. Key moments included a third quarter Indian drive capped by G Hicks scoring from the one yard line and Wilson adding the extra point. The win follows solid play by Hicks Layman Tupin Masters and G Hicks as Comanche plans a home game Friday night.
The Ward School Mothers Club hosts an open house and a silver tea on Thursday night from 6 to 9 at the new Ward School building. Refreshments of punch and cookies will be served and the public is invited to attend.
Comanche Girl Scouts invite the public to an open house and art exhibit at the Girl Scouts Little House on Sunday afternoon October 12. A silver tea will be served and attendees are welcome.
Rev. O. A. Morton, longtime Gustine Methodist Church pastor, resigns his post on medical advice due to a chronic heart ailment. He served 1925 to 1929 and has held posts in Talpa, Rockwood, Burkett, and Sipe Springs, with plans to reside near Comanche.
Unofficial results show 190 for and 119 against the proposed annexation of the South sector of Comanche County to the Upper Leon Soil Conservation District. The Saturday election failed to meet the two thirds required for passage.
Mr and Mrs Albert Brannan of 605 West Central Comanche announce the birth of a son Robert William on Thursday October 2 at the German hospital. The baby weighed eight pounds four ounces and is the grandson of Mr and Mrs Roy Brannan of Comanche and Mr and Mrs Earl Seay of Newburg.
Reverend Johnson, who has preached at the Baptist Church for the past two Sundays, will return to deliver the sermon next Sunday. Parishioners are invited to attend the service and join fellowship afterward.
