A 52nd Judicial District grand jury returned 16 true bills after two days of investigation. Indictments cover forgery theft burglary driving while intoxicated and murder with malice. Damon Hall, Sidney ranchman and livestock buyer, is indicted for murder in the August shooting death of Chester Carrouth. Hall is held on a $10,000 bond with C O McMillan as attorney. The jury commends local officials and requests discharge.
Louis Harelik and Don Lacy are named to lead Comanche’s United Fund Campaign. The drive emphasizes community support for Boy Scouts Camp Fire Girls and other youth organizations, with officers listed as Harelik president and Lacy drive chairman.
The Midwestern University Board of Regents in Wichita Falls promotes G W York from Assistant Registrar to Director of Admissions. He has served two years at the university and holds a BBA from North Texas State University and an MEd from Howard Payne College. The York family lives at 5046 Lindale Drive.
A frame house with five rooms on 1400 East Highland was destroyed by a fire called in at 10 50 pm. Joan Carpenter reported the blaze that spread widely inside the structure. The property belonged to Roy and Nelson Eanes, long residents of the area, with Louise Nelson living there earlier. The City Water Department and Lake Eanes were involved in response.
City works director announces improvements at the Comanche plant to enhance oxidation digestion and solid treatment. A new facility segment will circulate effluent back to the pond, aiming to better serve patrons and increase reliability of waste processing.
Fred Mabe a Stag Creek resident and City of Comanche police radio operator on night shift was named deputy sheriff by Sheriff Relve Bean and approved by the Commissioners Court. He succeeds Leon Sledge whose resignation becomes effective October 15. Sledge and his wife and son have moved to Abilene. Mrs Bean serves as day radio operator. The first seat of the U S Supreme Court was in Philadelphia.
Comanche Younghomers and Young Farmers announce a weiner roast at Newburg Community Center on Saturday night October 10. The event begins in the evening with plans for food and socializing.
Prospective jurors summoned for 9 a.m. Monday October 12 in District Court include Mrs. James Craddock of Guetine Rt 1 James Biggs of Comanche J D Gray of De Leon and many others from Comanche Gustine De Leon Indian Gap and Gustine listed with addresses and route numbers.
County Judge D. F. Caraway and Commissioners Claude Mc Pherson of Precinct 3 and Eddie McDougal of Precinct 2 joined more than 1,100 Texas judges and commissioners at the Corpus Christi conference. Officials said the gathering offered much information for county government improvement.
The Comanche Indians host Early Longhorns of Brownwood Friday night at 8:00 to end non conference play. Comanche has won three of five. Early has one win two ties and a loss. Coach Roger Oliver calls Early scrappy with a strong defense and plans to start Jolink McKinzie Willis Scott Gossett Williams Carney Culpepper Plumlee Alborn Shumpes with Huddeston Bien Fortner leading the offense.
William F. Bryant, ASC County Committee chairman, announced that grazing on diverted wheat and feed grain acres in Coman Che County begins October 1 due to dry conditions. Farmers may graze without downward payment adjustments if already deducted, with pro rata refunds over $3.00.
Comanche County teachers will gather at Comanche High School Auditorium Monday night October 12 at 7:30 announced by Gilbert Davis Superintendent of the Gase line school system. This will be the first of three meetings this year. President Miss Jewel Werner will lead discussions on the organization constitution and issues of interest to the group. Mrs Golden Reese will have a continuation on the last page.
The Area IV Texas Young Homemakers met at the Holiday Inn Brownwood on September 26 with 68 members present. Comanche attendees helped welcome guests as Mrs. Martha Efarman showcased "Tools of the Trade" from kitchen implements abroad to domestic uses.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home donated an ultra modern splint kit to the Comanche Volunteer Fire Department. The kit aid emergency care and pressure bandage placement, and Parke Davis reach kit is part of the department's Red Cross approved first aid equipment. Four members’ emergency first vehicles also carry listed equipment.
