W P Graham 43 a Comanche highway worker died minutes after being struck by a car on the Dublin Highway just inside Erath County. The wrecked car, driven by John Sword, overturned after impact. Funeral services were held at his residence with Rev A E Wilson officiating and burial in Oakwood Cemetery. He leaves a wife and son Tom Connally Graham, plus parents and a sister. He had served in the air service in WWI and was a longtime highway employee.
Lieut. Col. George F. Moore, a cousin and nephew to local families, heads all military activities at Texas A. and M. College. Born in 1887 in Austin, he entered in 1904 and graduated in 1908. He rose from First Lieutenant in 1912 to Lieutenant Colonel in 1934, overseeing 18 army officers and about 4,000 cadets at the college. Mrs Vas Preston left Thursday to visit with her niece C. Smith who is moving.
Mayor John E Hoff proclaims October 3 to 9 Fire Prevention Week in Comanche urging full cooperation from citizens and organizations. The statement stresses preventing fires, cleaning rubbish, and education for safer living, noting the city’s strong fire record and insurance savings.
The Sidney Community Fair opens today for a two day run with exhibits and a livestock judging on Saturday. A carnival is planned on the grounds both days per J B Cooper.
Gustine prepares a three day community fair starting Thursday October 14 with prizes in home demonstration art needlework cotton livestock poultry field crops and more. Amusements and games are planned as preparations continue for the event marked as the best fair yet in Gustine.
Comanche Lions Club sponsors two donkey baseball nights at Comanche Softball Park next Wednesday and Thursday. Local softball teams play first night with the Lions Club vs Brownwood Lions Club on the second. Thirteen donkeys will be used as players ride them during the games, attracting crowds from 500 to 2000 in West Texas towns.
Irvin Steele 20, of Comanche, died at 1:00 a.m. Sunday from burns suffered when a gasoline cook stove exploded at a farm home 12 miles from Stamford. He had gone to Jones County for chores and worked one day before the accident. He jumped into a ground cistern to extinguish the flames but could not escape. Interment was in Cox Cemetery near Sidney. Survived by his mother Carrie Steele and siblings Allie, Ruth, Frank, Ellis, Ed, Bud, Jessie Lee, and Annie Carter.
State Highway Commission on September 21 authorized 27000 dollars to improve Highway 36 from the Pettit Hasse lateral to Gustine in Comanche County. Projects include grading drainage and materials over about two miles, to be completed by a maintenance force account at up to 5000 dollars monthly, per Minute No. 14121.
Hamilton County approves a tax rate of 54 cents per hundred dollars of valuation. Total assessed values reach $8,235,375, slightly higher than Comanche County’s valuations. The action impacts property owners countywide and aligns with county budget needs.
Gustine school closed yesterday afternoon for two to three weeks to allow students to help with crop gathering. The district had just begun productive work when the vacation was announced. Homer L. Miller is the new superintendent, with a favorable year anticipated.
The Santa Fe Railway will operate a special train from Comanche to Dallas tomorrow for Children’s Day at the Pan American Exposition. Departure from Comanche is 4 05 am with arrival in East Dallas at 10 40 am. Return leaves East Dallas at 10 30 pm arrives Comanche about 6 am Sunday. Round trip fare is 1 45 for adults and children.
Richard Shelton, a leading Comanche resident and former officer, died Friday afternoon from gunshot wounds sustained while dove hunting just north of Comanche. Witnesses recount two shots as he crawled through a wire fence, collapsing after the first. Weatherby and Leverett Little rushed him toward a doctor, with Shelton later reloading and firing a second shot before succumbing.
Dublin businessman C. C. Baxter purchased the Tate building on the southeast square from John and Mrs. George W. Tate. The site sits at Highways 10 36 and 81 and houses four tenants J F Tate and Son C F Williams Dings Cafe and Big Nickel and the Railway Express. Baxter will take possession January 1 and plans a remodeling to open a department store. He already operates a large Dublin department store and KFPL Radio Station.
Comanche hosts Russell Bros Big 3 Ring Circus on Saturday October 9 with two performances at 2 p m and 8 p m at the local park. The program features elephants lions ponies clowns and a full menagerie along with acts from Fisher Five Fearless Flyers and Miss Acchaletta.
Willa Dean Faulkner a 15 year old Comanche High School sophomore died after a Sunday night wreck on Highway 10 near the county jail. The car carrying Faulkner and four others struck the rear of a truck. Funeral services were held at the residence with interment in Oakwood Cemetery.
Gustine High School Tigers travel to face Buffalo School in a conference game as Supt Miller seeks to move the kickoff to Gustine. Last Friday Gustine shut out Brookesmith 28 to 0.
Lamkin School will open Monday with a program at nine o clock. County Supt. B Ray Mc Corkle and Supt. Bramlette of Comanche will be principal speakers. Perry Moring states the faculty remains unchanged from last year.
The main Pet tit School building burned Wednesday night in a total loss. Most furniture and the home economics equipment were destroyed while the plano was saved. Three of four teachers worked in the affected building, and a smaller campus building remained.
A motor caravan of Comanche people will leave Comanche from the high school at 3:30 this afternoon to attend the Sidney Fair. Local business people are urged to provide rides if possible. The school band will accompany and perform a short program.
Mr and Mrs Eugene Dodson of Fort Worth visited Comanche this week to spend time with friends and relatives.
