Holiday season nears Thanksgiving is a week away with 29 shopping days left before Christmas. Local firms push gift purchases and layaway plans while ads promote a Hoover day sale at Higgins Furniture and dry cleaning services near A&P.
A Tuesday night fire at the Gold Kist Peanut Growers complex damaged one drying battery in a large sheet iron building at the former Durham Peanut Co. Fire Chief John T. Carpenter said the blaze started around 9 45 and burned past midnight. Power was briefly cut as crews fought the flames. Damages are described as thousands of dollars, with replacement plans for new and expanded facilities planned after the season.</s>
Hunters Association secretary announces a Saturday gathering on the 21st at Rodeo Mama. Kids and Indians may attend, with a prize of dog feed for a large item and recognition for the club’s efforts.
The 4-H Club of Soda Springs invites the community to a Thanksgiving supper on Tuesday November 24. The event includes a program and is open to all residents.
Local artist Monselle O'Brien of Comanche has an oil titled Family Homestead selected for the Cir cuit Exhibition B of the Texas Fine Arts Association. The work, numbered 13 and marked not for sale, carries a Circuit Merit from the Spring Jury and will tour venues including Fort Hood in October and Brownwood in November along the circuit itinerary.
Comanche County hosts its 4th annual Pecan Show on Saturday December 5 at the Gustine School Building led by Comanche County Pecan Association president L G Holland. A Bake Show division debuts with Judy Fleming chairing. Grand champion trophies and engraved plaques await division winners along with ribbons. Judges include L D Rombertz George Madden and Tom Derman from area experiment stations.
Ernesto Arias visiting County Agent from Costa Rica leaves Comanche for emergency travel after learning his father is critically ill. The family boarded a Brownwood flight to Houston and plan to reach Costa Rica by Friday noon.
Ard Payne College shows in San Angelo from December 1 to 18 at San Angelo College. Sweetwater hosts January 1 to 18 at Creative Art Club. Alpine runs January 25 to February 15 at Sul Ross College. Grand Falls presents February 18 to 28 at Sorosia Club. Midland schedules March 8 to 22 at Midland Palette Club Art Center. Snyder runs March 29 to April 15 at Wartha Ana Woman's Club.
Comanche Indian Band schedules a community smorgasbord at the Junior High School Cafetorium on Saturday November 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All you can eat for one dollar tickets are available from any bandsman.
Mr and Mrs Clyde Silvus spent the week end in Comanche visiting Mrs O O Brightman Miss Hattie Brightman and other relatives. Mr Silvus made a business trip to Abilene on Monday.
A Community Thanksgiving Service will be held Wednesday night November 25 at the First Baptist Church Comanche. Jim McCall of First Presbyterian will deliver the message with B L McCord of First Methodist giving a welcome and recognition. Paul Goodwin will lead congregational singing and the Community Choir will perform Now Thank We All Our God. John Wiles of First Baptist extends the invitation.
Gustine Tigers meet Mullin at Gustine on Thursday night September 19 at 7 30 to decide the district title. Gustine is undefeated in district play while Mullin has one tie and aims to avoid loss as coaches George Ellis and David Andrews prepare a strong effort. A large crowd is expected per Superintendent Gilbert Davis.
Hope Lodge No. 481 announces plans for a new temple on the Thoeberg lot, five blocks from the square on N. Austin. Worshipful Master J. O. Gandy and local lodge members push ahead, inviting support and assistance from the community.
The Comanche Chief will publish one day early on Wednesday due to Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Thursday Nov 26 will be a holiday in Comanche and schools will observe a two day break Thursday and Friday.
Comanche boys and girls depart for Eastland Friday night for season openers. Girls play at 7 00 and boys around 8 15 with 9 returning lettermen. Key returnees include Hugh Fletcher Skipper Shumpes Bill Williams George Salais and others under coach Russell Berry with Bill Williams likely sidelined this trip. First home tilt against De Leon set for Tuesday November 24.
A degree team from a Dalhkis Masonic Lodge will travel to Comanche Monday night Nov. 23 and be welcomed at Hope Lodge No. 481. All Master Masons are urged to come observe this team work in the Masters Degree.
Comanche Lions Club schedules a Ladies Night program on Tuesday November 24 at the Golden Arrow Cafeteria. The meeting starts at 6 30 with a Thanksgiving dinner and a nationally known speaker to address members.
Community appeals in Comanche as the Greater Comanche United Fund reports 3600 dollars raised toward a 7000 dollar goal. Drive chair Don Lacy calls for immediate donations before the final week ends, stressing support for seven participating organizations and needy youth.

The staff includes four servicemen with over 60 years combined experience in radio TV and refrigeration repair.
An International Thanksgiving Program at the Stag Creek Community Center will be held Saturday night November 21. The traditional supper starts at 7 30 o clock. Foreign students from 12 countries will be honored. they attend Tarleton State College Howard Payne College and Texas A M University. The public is invited to attend the supper and program organized by local committees.
The Dublin Lions, District 7-AA champions, meet Fredericksburg Hillbillies, District 8-AA winners, in Brady at 8 pm Saturday Nov 21 for the bi district title. Dublin is 10-0 with 411 points scored. Fredericksburg stands 7-3 and 4-0 in district play.
