Cardwell Brothers Reunite After War Service

Comanche residents Mr and Mrs B G Cardwell celebrate a double homecoming. Thanksgiving market opens with large turkeys in Comanche

The Lookey market reports the Thanksgiving turkey market opening at a brisk pace. The Farmers Cheese and Produce Company of Comanche has started a dressing plant. R W Wyatt notes larger birds and good quality, with about the same car loads as last year. Army demand will freeze the crop before civilian sale. Shortage of turkey pickers cited and more workers needed.

Glen Statum Promoted to First Lieutenant in Italy

Lt. Glen W. Statum, United States Army Air Corps, stationed in Italy, has been promoted from second lieutenant to first lieutenant. A Sidney High School graduate and bombardier aboard a B-24 Liberator, he has flown 36 missions over enemy territory. Parents Mr and Mrs D Statum of Comanche received the news.

W C McHorse urges about 100 more signers for Frozen Food Lockers to start the Comanche plant. WPB approval requires 60 percent pre sold lockers before material release. Lockers cost 12 dollars for door type and 15 dollars for drawer type for one year. Deposits collected by local businesses as plans move toward a meat processing facility.

Gustine Soldier in Regiment That Helped Smash Gustav Line

Gustine Texas gunner Donald R Mattews served with the 349th Infantry Regiment of the 88th Division in Lt General Mark W Clark's Fifth Army. The unit helped break the Gustav and Hitler Lines and pushed from the Garigliano to the Arno. The 349th, nicknamed Kraut Killers, fought through difficult terrain to secure key targets near Rome and during the Arno River campaign.

Shoemaker Honored With Distinguished Flying Cross

Comanche Texas sergeant Dale J Shoemaker a 15th Air Force gunner has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement in aerial flight. He completed over fifty combat missions including a dangerous return to base after his bomber was damaged by flak near the Yugoslav coast and later repaired hydraulic lines to secure a safe landing. Shoemaker 51st mission came with the Liberator Group under Lt Col John P Tomhave. He is on a 30 day furlough visiting wife Nita Jean and parents in Harmony community. He is invited as honored luncheon guest at the local Lions Club meeting.
