Sidney schools closed this week as flu spreads with 80 plus pupils absent and classes dismissed until next Monday. Four faculty members ill including football coach J W Massingale. the Eagles head to Star Thursday seeking a third straight title amid the outbreak. Comanche schools reopen after flu closures with about 75 students out and four staff ill.
A special Texas Comanche County election is set for Tuesday November 6 with three constitutional amendments on the ballot. Polls open 8 am to 7 pm under county commissioners and local election staff. Proposition 1 expands retirement benefits and lowers employee contributions. Proposition 2 would allow an annual $47 million appropriation for old age support.
Plans for the Greater Comanche United Fund Drive were announced with a $6 700 goal for 1957 to begin November 15 at the Comanche Electric Cooperative building. Officers include Joe Waring president Bill Dudney vice president Mrs Jim Ellis secretary and Boyd Anthony treasurer.
Tarleton State College student from Comanche Bill Curry, a former Indian athlete, works toward a geology degree while in a wheelchair after a 1956 Texas A&M tumbling accident. He balances six weekly class hours with a daily, wheelchair logistics routine and school help.
William C. Brownlee son of Mr and Mrs O F Brownlee of De Leon has been awarded the W Goodrich Jones Memorial Scholarship at Texas A M College where he is a sophomore forestry student The scholarship honors the late pioneer leader in forestry and conservation in Texas.
Mrs D T Coker and her son Otis attended the funeral for Adolph Yeager in Lampasas on Sunday. Yeager, a Lampasas resident for over 20 years and former Comanche County resident, died Saturday in Bryan.

Curry, a Comanche Indian football standout from the early 1950s, aimed to finish his college hours at Tarleton, transfer to Texas A&M, and pursue geophysics after graduation. He planned summer surgery and hospital treatments in Dallas while continuing coursework and addressing ongoing financial and familial support.
Brownwood resident Ms Alice Stokes won last week’s Comanche Chief Football Guessing contest by correctly predicting all winners despite a flu epidemic and two cancellations. City Council names John Carpenter as driver for the Comanche Volunteer Fire Department with duties starting Friday November 1. He becomes the department’s only paid member after succeeding Ted Bear who had served since Chief Bob Graham’s death and also was assistant chief since last October.
Johnny Huett twelve year old son of Mr and Mrs C L Huett suffered a broken arm and a severe head cut Tuesday night after he fell from the stands at Indian Memorial Stadium while watching the Comanche and Stephenville junior football game.
The Comanche chamber of commerce outlines a four week Goodwill Days event starting November 27 with 1500 expected prizes. First prize of 100 goes to a ticket holder, with a Santa Day jackpot if absent. Weekly prizes of 25 15 and 10 accompany entertainment by local merchants. Santa Day will wrap the series with Saint Nicholas handing out gifts. Tickets go to merchants by November 20.

Comanche High School postponed its Halloween Carnival from Thursday to Monday due to flu related absences and a conflicting football game with Stephenville. Queen nominees include Wanda Hilliard Linda Flanagan Janice Isham with duchesses and escorts named for each class and senior duchess Imogene.
Comanche hosts Dublin Hamilton and Dublin this week as illness thinned the Indians roster. Coach Bill Scoggins says a healthy squad could shock Granbury, while Rusty McCollum’s Lions aim to continue a strong recent stretch. kickoff at 8 p.m. promises a hard fought game.
