Comanche undertakes a sanitation drive led by Mayor W C House and City Council with Health Officer Dr Lane urging residents to curb trash disposal. The effort runs through Monday and seeks broad citizen cooperation to improve cleanliness.
Maj. Troy Cauley son of Mr and Mrs W C Cauley will be guest speaker at Central Christian Church Sunday morning June 2 a.m. service He served with the American in London during the war and holds degrees from UT Wisconsin and a Ph D He previously taught at several universities and worked for the Federal Government The public is invited to hear his message.
Benjamin Berton Fields 57 died suddenly Monday afternoon while digging bait at his East Grand Avenue home. He had battled heart trouble. funeral service was held Tuesday at Hasse Baptist Church. Survived by wife Jesse Ruth Vineyard and numerous children, grandchildren, and siblings. He formerly farmed in Hasse and later worked as a salesman in Comanche before retirement.
W. E. Heatley of De Leon and former Sipe Springs School superintendent announces candidacy for State Representative in this district. He is a longtime local teacher and will release his full statement in this issue.
The pastor will lead the 1st Sunday services at the Presbyterian Church next Sunday. The morning sermon titled The Pathos of Doubt will begin at 11 o'clock. An evening Bible Reading on How to Make a Success of the Christian Life follows at 8. Congregation members and friends are asked to bring their Bibles. all are welcome.
Co manche Softball League enters a tight race as six teams are 1 win 1 loss. Friday opener features Oscar Hills Scalpers vs Jack Wheat City Slickers, followed by Frank Vineyard Dodgers vs Allen Beck Warriors. Monday and Friday games draw large crowds with free admission at the local football field.
Comanche High School announced award winners at graduation led by Bill Lane as Best All-Around Boy and Jane Franks as Best All-Around Girl chosen by the faculty. Other honorees included Jack E. Freeman Bernice Taber Jan Franks Betty Lou Parker and Jack Ferrill along with Danforth Awards for Bill Lane and Sara Lou Carroll based on character religious activity scholarship and sportsmanship.
The Comanche Chief announces higher rates effective July 1 due to newsprint cost increases. In Comanche County and trade territory the rate is $1 for eight months or $1.50 per year, elsewhere $2 per year or $1 for six months. Prior to July 1 subscribers may renew at $1 per year in county or $1.50 outside.
Comanche merchants announce Saturday closing hours at 8 30 with many shops named including Kilpatrick s Freeman s Baxter s Starr s Co Ed Shop Western Auto Roberson Sisters Hoffman s Reese Palmer s Nov it s J T Mays Co Higginbotham s Co Perry Brothers.
The Daily Vacation Bible School holds commencement exercises at 8 pm with children aged four to sixteen giving recitations and handwork. Pastor's title The Tears Which Came Too Late will be preached with an illustrated chalk talk The Orchard of God. Sunday School starts at 9 45 am and Training Union at 6 45 pm. Mr and Mrs Richard A Praske of Galveston visited the parsonage during the past weekend.
Mrs Sallie Deason plans a piano studio at the home of Mrs R D Massingill on North Houston Street in Comanche, starting Tuesday June 4. She taught public school music in Caldwell for three years and holds a B A from Sam Houston Teachers College and a Master of Music from Cincinnati School of Music. She will take piano pupils of all ages and seeks former Brumbelow students to continue lessons.
Comanche Chapter No. 310 Order of the Eastern Star will install new officers on Tuesday June 4 at 8 PM. Officers include Fay Chaffin as Worthy Matron Virgil Chaffin as Worthy Patron and Elizabeth Jackson as Secretary. Mae Clemons leads the ceremony with Theresa Dudley Lottie rt and E L Ramsey assisting. All members invited.
Rev. J. W. Whitefield of the First Methodist Church will leave Sunday night to conduct a revival in Granbury.
A Sunday morning Santa Fe freight train, the first to leave Brownwood for Fort Worth after a rail strike, derailed 12th car from the engine near Blanket Creek. Twenty-three cars, mostly wheat, were wrecked. 880 feet of track torn up and a 92-foot bridge destroyed. Crew uninjured. cleanup and track repair underway as trains reroute via Temple.
Memorial services will be held Sunday June 2 at Concord in Taylor's Chapel community. Dr C C Klingman pastor of Central Christian Church Comanche will deliver the sermon at 10 30 Sunday morning. Dinner will be served on the grounds at noon and there will be singing in the afternoon.
O. A. Otis Braziel of Comanche announces his candidacy for re election as Constable of Precinct 0. His name will appear in the regular political column of the paper.
Comanche plans limited street paving as funds allow with early work on Wright Avenue toward Highway 36 West and Grand Avenue extension from Mrs. E Jones residence to Highway 36 West. East High Avenue to be hard surfaced. If funds permit, a major repair on the courthouse square, paved about three years ago, may be done.
Funeral services were held for Delbert Davis Kendall 28 formerly of Comanche at the First Baptist Church in Graham. He died from injuries in a car wreck near Ranger. Kendall was a Graham High School captain and soldier who served as a crew chief on a C-47 in the Army Air Forces earning nine bronze stars and a Presidential Citation. He is survived by his parents, a brother, a sister, and was preceded by a sister.
The pastor will preach at the regular Sunday service and Sunday afternoon he travels to Granbury for a revival led by Rev. Van P. Morrison. Dr. C. C. Klingman preaches Sunday evening at 8. Church School has good attendance. Vacation Church School starts Monday for two weeks led by Mrs. Virgil Chaffin.
The Ritz Theatre owned by Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Carter Jr. opens Monday afternoon June 3 with God's Country starring Robert Lowry. The remodeled venue on the square adds RCA sound gear Simplex projectors and 400 new seats. Admission 10 cents children 20 cents adults.
Rev J D Dobbs pastor of the First Baptist Church Gustine will conduct an evangelistic meeting at Stag Creek from June 7 to June 16. Sponsored by the Brotherhood of the First Baptist Church Comanche it extends a special invitation to all to attend.
A cemetery working event is planned at Comyn on Thursday June 13. A basket lunch will be served at noon and all interested in the cemetery are urged to attend.
