Local amateur boxing show at Comanche High School Gym

Leading amateur fighters from Comanche and nearby towns battle in a Friday night program May 24 sponsored by the Comanche FFA Chapter and directed by Ralph Moser. Main events feature Oscar Wilhelm versus Buster Burrell and Guy Ruth versus Ira Collins with several undercard bouts and a four-man battle royal. Admission for children is 15 cents, adults 25 cents, ringside 35 cents.

The Comanche nine hosts De Leon Sunday at Comanche Grammar School grounds at 2 30. Comanche seeks its seventh game win of the season while De Leon owns the only win against them this year. The series stands one to one with last month a 6-5 Comanche victory in De Leon and a 10-8 De Leon win in Comanche three weeks ago.

Members of the Comanche County Jersey Breeders Association will meet Saturday afternoon at 2 30 in the County Agent office. E C Seay of Sidney, association president, urges full attendance of executive committeemen with O B Phillips of Harmony, secretary. Anyone interested in improving dairy herds is invited. Volley Meyer's stands one of the association's registered Jersey bulls at his home northeast of Comanche.

Ira B. Clemons has purchased the interest of his partner Jim Martin in the Clemons and Martin Motor Company and is now sole owner. The firm is renamed Clemons Motor Company. No future plans announced by Mr. Martin.

Comanche County Blackberry Crop Opens Heavy Movement

Comanche County blackberries for the 1940 season began selling last week and the Durham Pecan and Peanut Company opened its berry canning plant as contracts approach last season’s level. Walter Durham notes contracts may total around 15 000 crates, with market peak expected next week and May 27 as a likely heavy canning day. Prices rise about five cents per crate over 1939.

Market For All Comanche Co Grapes Assured

Hil ton Burks secretary of the Chamber of Commerce says Comanche County will have a market for all grapes this year with prospects for a bumper crop. Southern Winery Inc of San Antonio wrote it will buy all Comanche grapes offered, buying in lots of 30 bushels and up.

Sam Ash Trial Postponed to Next October Term

The Sam Ash murder case was postponed by Judge R B Cross to the next October district court term. Defense attorney Fred O Jaye said Mrs Fred Heflin in De Leon is too ill to attend the trial a material witness. District Attorney H W Allen said the state is ready for trial and a 100 man jury panel was drawn for venue in De Leon where the elder Ash was shot five times with a .38 pistol.

County Welfare Office Moves to Gille Building

Comanche County Welfare office relocated from the Masonic Building to the Gille Building three blocks west of the square on Brownwood Street. Mrs. Ernestine Arthur states the office will serve WPA and NYA applicants on Mondays and CCC Camp applicants on Wednesdays.
