Gustine Lieutenant Leads First Berlin Mission in Lightning Fighter

1st Lt. Wilton E. Wyche of Gustine Texas flies with the RAF Eighth Fighter Command from England on the first Berlin mission in a Lockheed Lightning. The squadron reports surprisingly little opposition and minimal anti-aircraft fire as they escort bombers deep into Germany. Lt. Col. Jack Jenkins praises the group for pioneering long range fighter missions and protecting Forts and Libs on deep penetrations into Hitlerland. Wyche holds Oak Leaf Clusters and has over forty sortie credits. he is 24, son of W. J. Wyche, and a Gustine High School graduate.

Missing in Action Tech Sgt Polvado of Gustine

Tech/Sergeant Robert Leo Polvado, son of Mrs Loma Polvado of Comanche, a radio gunner on a Flying Fortress in England, is listed as missing in action by the War Department since April 17 over Germany. He is a 1941 Gustine High School graduate, Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, entered Army October 1942, earned aerial gunnery wings at Las Vegas and has been overseas since last November.

Berry Growers Asked To List Crop At Coil

The Comanche Chamber of Commerce will assist blackberry growers to find a market this year and asks growers to list names, amount of berries, and readiness date at the Chamber. Listings will be shared with truckers and buyers. Walter Durham of Durham Berry Plant says his facility will not operate this season due to price uncertainty, labor shortages, and supply gaps.

Missing in Action Captain Foster Cash

Captain Foster Cash, former Newburg School teacher and pilot in the American Eighth Air Force based in England, is listed as missing in action. His home is Pioneer in Eastland County. Set and Mrs Nap Thomas of Frederick Oklahoma visit his mother Mrs M Thomas here this week.

Former Comanche Woman Shot In Brownwood

Mrs. Johnnie Burks, once of Comanche and widow of Frank Hughes, was shot in the hip with a .410 shotgun at her Brownwood home and hospitalized in critical condition. Investigators consider possible links to bathroom facilities. Mrs. Daisy Templeton faces assault with intent to kill charges after the shooting.

Mobile Blood Unit Sets Four Day Pints Record in Comanche

The Red Cross Mobile Blood Bank Unit in Comanche collected 747 pints of blood over four days at the First Baptist Church basement. Mills County volunteers from Goldthwaite Mullin Priddy Star and others contributed 225 pints on opening day and 208 on De Leon Day. The drive, led by Mrs. E D Cox and Roy Brannan, drew strong local support despite weather with a planned return September 11 15.

Bearded Chief Drennan of LCI(L) 28 Celebrates Pacific Campaign

Chief O L Drennan, 24, son of Lee J Drennan of Sidney, a U S Navy officer aboard the LCI L 28, is shown after a successful South Pacific campaign. The ship averaged over 600 landings as he recalls visiting Kiriwana an island with 8000 inhabitants reportedly opposed to marriage. He plans a possible transfer to the Atlantic to face the Nazis and return home to Sidney Texas.

Arden Lewis, formerly a major, has been promoted to lieutenant colonel and is now stationed in Egypt in the Adjutant General's Department. His wife and daughter Marilynn remain at home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Donaho.

Claude George, recently released from the Veterans Hospital in Dallas after several weeks, returned home Monday night with his brother Jimmy George. He is resting and plans to devote the next weeks to getting back into shape.

Newburg Teachers Re-elected at Trustees Meeting

Newburg school trustees reelected all teachers at a recent meeting. Miss Marie Locke continues as principal with Mrs. James Carter and Miss Nannie Perry assisting. Skinner of the U S Naval Air Corps has been assigned a Hell Diver pursuit plane named The Comanche Chief He is a Comanche High School graduate who plans to take the aircraft into combat service soon The letter from his mother Mrs Bessie Skinner dated Odessa Texas May 16 1944 requests in one year sending the Comanche Chief to Ensign Skinner at NAS Vero Beach Florida with a note that he believes the Chief will bring him back safely.

Comanche County Sets Fifth War Bond Quota at 460000

County War Finance Chairman Eiland Fagan announced a 460000.06 goal for the Fifth War Loan Drive June 12 to July 8, with 215000 of the total allotted to individual citizens in Series E Bonds. He urged all 18000 residents to act now, recalling local sacrifice and the ongoing war effort. Corporal Frank O. Hughes, overseas for 15 months, was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and serves as a barber in the South Pacific with his family in Dublin, Texas.

Ritchey Leads Marauder Strike on Nazi Rail Bridge

1st Lt. Logan A. Ritchey of Stephenville and Lt. Hugh D. Tidwell of Gary Indiana led a Marauder group from Sardinia to Arezzo Italy to bomb the Florence Rome Directissine line They knocked down a 280 foot three span bridge damaged approaches and cut the main German rail line officials reported the strike disrupted supply movements and grounded traffic for the duration of the mission.
