Gene Gilbreath chair of the Upper Leon District cites shortages pollution and land use concerns as reasons for observance Participation includes churches bulletin covers and an observance booklet prepared by the National Soil Stewardship Advisory Committee. This marks the 21st consecutive year with nearly 3,000 districts nationwide involved.

Peanut Soil Temperature Monitoring Across Three Areas
Soil temperatures will be recorded each Tuesday morning until mid May to guide peanut planting decisions. Readings occur between 7 and 9 a.m. from three thermometers located in three county areas. Area 1 includes Sidney Beattie and Comanche. area 2 covers De Leon Duster Rock Bluff Rucker and Desdemona. area 3 covers Proctor Hasse and Gustine. A recording of weekly temperatures is available at 915-356-5111. Daily pest summaries will follow peanut season.

Registration continues at the elementary school for children aged 3 4 or 5 by next Sept 1. Four year olds are screened in June for learning difficulties and may enter the Early Childhood Program for about two hours daily. Kindergarten will offer half and full day classes, with spots needing early signup.
