Nine Voting Boxes Open in Comanche County Election

Election day limits polling to nine boxes due to a new state law. North county residents must vote in De Leon while Comanche County stations operate at CHS gym VFW in Comanche and at Hasse Gustine Proctor Lamkin and Hazel Dell. Polls run 8:00 am to 7:00 pm with results tabulated by The Comanche Chief.

Appeals Court Upholds Burglary Conviction in Moya Case

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on Wednesday April 24 affirmed Pedro Moya's burglary conviction and two five year probated terms. Moya argued trial error for not quashing the indictment due to alleged Mexican American grand jury exclusion in Comanche County. The court noted Mexican Americans are a small county share and stayed the conviction.

Groundbreaking Planned for United Methodist Educational Building

The First United Methodist Church will break ground Sunday afternoon May 5 at 2 00 for a new 9000 square foot education facility west of the current church on land bought in 1970 The Rev Gordon Dennis and Rev Frank L Turner Jr lead the event with church leaders and architects Patterson Lowden Dunlap Epperly Fort Worth and Comanche Construction providing bids above the estimated cost The project includes a chapel parlor fellowship hall library offices and space for the entire church school with total costs over 20000000

Per Pupil Education Costs in Comanche District

Supt H R Jefferies notes from Texas Education Agency figures show 71-72 per pupil cost at 621 dollars with state funding masking higher program costs. State average for similar districts was 685, local funding about 200 including 50 bonded debt. Future years expect higher costs but state aid will cover about 90 percent of salary increases while local district bears maintenance and operation costs.
