Comanche Chamber to Host TP&L Executive Talk

Jake Billingsley administrative assistant to the VP of operations for Texas Power & Light will discuss Do Your Own Thing at the Comanche Chamber of Commerce banquet Saturday May 3 at 7 p.m. at the PAR Country Club. He will speak on Americanism and individual responsibilities in a free society. Billingsley from Texarkana joined TP&L in 1964 and now serves as a community development consultant aiding leaders in TP&L 52 county service area. He assumed his current post in April.

Boy Scouts Reorganize Meeting Tuesday Night

Parents interested in the Boy Scout program may attend an organizational meeting at the First United Methodist Church on Tuesday May 6 at 730 pm. John Pound District Scout Director will conduct the session as leaders and committee members are sought.

Lt. Ken Rachels Earns Bronze Star Medal in Vietnam

First Lieutenant Kenneth L. Rachels son of Mr and Mrs H J Rachels Rt 5 Comanche received the Bronze Star Medal March 23 near Dong Tam Vietnam for heroism in ground combat. He is with Headquarters Battery 3d Battalion 7th Infantry Division's 24th Artillery and entered the Army in December 1966 arriving overseas in October 1968. Rachels graduated CHS in 1958 attended Texas Technological College in Lubbock and is married to Linda Williams of 103 10th St Comanche.

Friends Drive For Library Funds A Great Success

The annual Friends of Comanche Public Library drive was highly successful with goals for memberships and funds on track. Donations should be sent to treasurer Rena Owens or drive chair Mrs James Wilkerson, with follow up for those missed in the initial drive. Proceeds fund new books for the library.

Comanche City Launches Annual Clean-Up Drive

City officials urge residents to prepare for a May 13 to 16 cleanup, offering free trash hauling from private premises. Public Works Director Richard Bean says crews will collect refuse, limbs, weeds, and garbage placed by streets for access, to reduce health and fire hazards and curb mosquito breeding.

Comanche High School announces 1969 valedictorian Sharon Beaty and salutatorian Shelley Houck. Beaty carries 96.08 average, Houck 95.98. Eight seniors graduate. Baccalaureate is May 18 at 5 PM and commencement May 22 at 8 PM in the high school auditorium.

Bank Burglary Roils Gustine. $12,000 Stolen From Vault

Burglars torched the vault at First State Bank in Gustine using a torch and water to cool the metal. They entered through the roof, looted cash and customer boxes, and left behind tools, hose, and gear, while no nightwatchman was present.

First Proctor Liquor Permit Granted in Comanche County

Handy Liquor Store owned by Robert E. Pasham Jr. receives the first Package Store Permit and Beer Off-Premise License from the Texas Liquor Control Board in Comanche County. Located near Dublin on Fort Worth Highway, the store marks the first legal sale of alcoholic beverages in over 50 years in the county following an April 5 election. Protests to the election were filed April 18.

Mazurek Named Valedictorian In Sidney Eighth Grade

Carol Mazurek daughter of Mr and Mrs T C Mazurek Sr of Sidney is named valedictorian with a high grade average and Mary Clark named salutatorian with 90 31 Wayne Vineyard top male student with 89 17 Jr High commencement set for May 15 at 8 am in the Sidney School auditorium. Jim Armstrong To Compete In State Track Meet Austin

CHS senior Jimmy Armstrong will run in the State Track Meet in Austin on Saturday. A three year letterman, he qualified for the 120 yard high hurdles by finishing second at the Regional meet nine weeks ago. Armstrong holds district records in the high hurdles and 330 intermediate hurdles and has competed regionally for three years. Coach Houston Jolley praised his improvement and said he has a strong chance to place in the top three.

Lubke to Receive A&M Opportunity Award

Royce Lubke of Comanche will receive a Texas A&M University Opportunity Award presented as an Educational Opportunity Grant. The grant includes a $500 cash stipend to help attendance and additional student aid for four years. Lubke graduates as CHS's top male senior and has excelled for four years.

Cemetery Working Set for Board Church May 10

A cemetery working is scheduled for Board Church on Saturday May 10 per J KK Westmoreland chairman. Work begins around 10 AM with an old time stew served at noon. Coffee and tea will be provided and ladies are asked to bring sweets.
