Comanche to Host First Annual Fruit and Melon Show
The Comanche area will hold its first annual Fruit and Melon Show on Thursday and Friday August 14 and 15. Promoted by the Farm Marketing Association and local businessmen, the event features displays of fruits and farm products, a carnival, a queen coronation, and other entertainment. Organizers plan farm displays in courthouse basement rooms and have formed committees for premiums judges publicity and arrangements.

Death of Comanche pioneer Floyd Carpenter noted
Floyd Carpenter 90 longtime Comanche resident and friend of The Comanche Chief died Tuesday afternoon at home after months of illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at Comanche Funeral Home with Gordon Barrett and E. G. Gregory officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. An Arkansan by birth, he came to Comanche in 1893 and remained tied to the local cattle and produce business. His sons John and Bob Carpenter worked with The Chief, and another son Robert was a former editor. Known as Uncle Floyd, he frequently visited the Chief office, greeting friends and watching life on the square.

Indictments Set After Nine Day Grand Jury Session
Thirty six indictments with thirty three felonies and three misdemeanors were handed up by a nine day grand jury. Docketing for District Court Monday promises a busy session. Durham firm plans expanded berry and pea canning in Comanche
The Durham Pecan and Peanut Company will can blackeyed peas in Comanche this summer with a new large pressure cooker to handle 1000 cans per run. The plant will open about May 25 and operate through August, with berries also canned and a move to new machinery east of the Comanche Feed and Grain Company. Comanche County, a leading berry producer in West Texas, expects a strong crop and higher contract prices with bonuses for larger yields. the plant previously canned 36,000 Number 2 cans of blackberries in a single day.
