County School Trustees to Be Elected April 5

In Comanche County voters will elect county trustees for Precincts 2 and 3 on April 5. Current trustees Itis and Shockley have long served those precincts and face opposition expected to be light, as they continue to oversee local schools with diligence.

Sidney Takes Lead In Tennis At Comanche County Meet

Sidney High School tennis led the Comanche County intra scholastic meet with titles in several divisions. John David Milton of Comanche won the Senior Boys singles title, Sidney won the Junior Boys doubles and Girls events, and Erma Lee McPherson of Comanche reached the Girls final. Final rounds were set for the weekend with matches featuring Sidney versus Leon in several doubles finals.

Carter Calf Tops Comanche Show in Fort Worth Auction

Gene Carter's Hereford calf weighing 900 pounds earned 12th place at the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show while selling for 15 cents per pound. Amon G. Carter, Fort Worth Star-Telegram publisher, officiated the event concluding Comanche's 1xth Annual Junior Livestock Show.

Comanche Grammar School Choral Club Contestants Named

Comanche Grammar School celebrates its Choral Club lineup for recent contests. Members include Gene Arthur, Onceil Briscoe, Ina B Burks, Myrtle Lounsley, Dorothy Payne, Patsy Wayne, Mary K Slider, Elma Ann Jeans, Jean Tucker, Jan Franks, and others. The club recently won a top prize and displays a trophy from the Inter athletic League, with a potential permanent possession if they win again.

Major Mosley To Deliver Address At CHS Tuesday

Major Jesse E. Moseley, Judge Advocate of the 36th Division, and staff member at Camp Bowie, will speak to Comanche High School students Tuesday at 10:30 in the high school auditorium. He is noted for a long military career and prominent civil status in Texas. His Houston home is given, and the public is invited to attend.

Road Work to Start Monday on Highway 16

Hilton Burks of the Comanche Chamber says work begins Monday on Highway 16 from the railroad to six miles south toward Goldthwaite. Southern Construction Company of Austin holds the $83,000 contract with WPA labor. Machinery arrived Thursday. Concrete bridges will span Indian Creek in Comanche and Horse Creek south of town.

Men 21 Not Required To Register For Draft

Men who have turned 21 since October 16, 1940 need not register for Selective Service training unless a new registration day is proclaimed by the President. They may volunteer. General J. Watt Page, State Director, announced this. A registrant over 36 since October 16, 1940 remains liable for training.

Repair Work Underway on Durham Building

Work began this week on repairing the Durham Building on the West Side of the Square. The property, recently purchased by N. N. and Jake Durham from William Reese, houses the Wm. Reese Drug Store and The Mohon Dependable Drygoods Store. A blue glass front and interior improvements are planned for both buildings.

Officers of County Meet Debates and Contests

A listing of events and officers for the County Meet includes director general debate extemporaneous speech spelling ready writing athletics choral singing music memory arithmetic picture memory story telling one act play typing and shorthand three R contest. County Superintendent Dale Howard heads the program with officials and coordinators across multiple towns.

CHS Band Members Win Prizes at Brownwood Clinic

Comanche High School band members earned top placements at the Brownwood Clinic held with the Mid Texas Teachers Convention. Jack Scudder won first in cornet, Larrymore Shankle led trombones, and Ther man Fagan tied for first in basses. Dewey Fields finished second in baritone, Betty Payne second in flutes, Willis Preston Carmichael placed fourth in basses. No other Comanche entries. Hasse School Honors First Six Weeks Students

Local FFA Boys Win Big at Junior Livestock Show

Co manche High School FFA members earned multiple prizes across gilts turkeys calves and lambs at the recent Junior Livestock Show. Top placements included Gene Carter first in milk fed calf and a club calf showing at Fort Worth Fat Stock Show, with calves selling at 15 cents and 13 and a half cents per pound.

The Comanche County Debate Tournament at Comyn High School featured judges from Hamilton County. Comyn girls took first, Gustine second, Sidney third. Comyn boys earned first with Sidney second.

Two CHS Teachers Quit To Join The Brownwood Faculty

Miss Blanche Dabney and Miss Fauline White, English teachers at Comanche High School, resigned this week to take teaching jobs in Brownwood. The school board voted not to accept their resignations, but both gave final notice Wednesday to begin teaching in Brownwood Morsday. Dabney taught three years at Comanche. White is in her first year.

Hundreds of Comanche County students travel to Comanche for the 29th Annual Interscholastic League Meet. Officials including Superintendent Dale Howard and Mayor M. Coleman promise full hospitality as merchants boost events with ads. Declamations in the morning at First Methodist Church and Comanche High School, plus evening singing contests, start at 7 p.m. Finals in track and field are set for Saturday afternoon at the ball park with athletic events beginning late morning.

Jackets For Indian Cagers at Comanche High

Comanche High School ordered nine black and gold jackets for basketball lettermen, the first such presentation by the school. Recipients include A. J. Coker, Rector Swann, Dalton Perkins, Truett Vines, Billie Ed Seay, Thomas Marshall, Hubert Eoff, Truman Vines, and Hall. The Indian cagers finished 9 wins and 8 losses in 1940-41, with six lettermen expected back next season: Coker Swann Truett Vines Truama Vines Eoff and Hall.
