Comanche’s east square once housed the Comanche Opera House a hub of early 20th century life. The red brick building no longer exists but memories linger of upstairs meeting rooms Knights of Pythias and a central stage with a roll-up curtain and wooden benches. Local players and traveling shows filled programs from Bill Kersand’s Negro Minstrel Show to Spooner Dramatic Co. of San Angelo while the Rathbone Sisters and church benefit performances drew townsfolk together. Ernest Carpenter, longtime fireman, recalled Spooner visits and the fire pole anecdote, linking town services and culture in one tale.
