Attendance figures for Comanche Public Schools fourth six weeks show overall participation levels. Data notes indicate standard roll counts across campuses with percentages reflecting student attendance and attendance-related actions.
In a County Courtroom ceremony on February 20 Mrs Billie W Wilkinson accepted the Bronze Star awarded posthumously to her husband Sergeant First Class Wilkinson of the 1st Infantry Division He died November 4 1968 near An Loc Republic of Vietnam after directing his platoon under heavy fire while aiding a wounded comrade. His actions earned him high commendation for courage and leadership reflecting credit upon himself and the U S Army.
In Comanche the city race lacks opposition with Mayor Gyale Pirkle and two councilmen seeking re election. Five candidates emerged for the two school board seats led by W N Gleaton a local contractor with two school children and church ties. Other hopefuls include Les Strawn Fidon R Tupin David H Beene and J D Warren. Sid Carney and Clyde Williams did not seek re election. April 5 election day.
Indian Trail Maidens advance toward the Class AA state with a 59 52 bi district win over Winters. Comanche faces Hale Center at 1 pm in Lubbock with the winner meeting Spearman or Staton at 8 30 pm Saturday. Broadcast set on KCOM at 12 55.
The Comanche Eastern Star Chapter hosts District Three Section Five School of Instruction in the Masonic Hall on Tuesday March 11. Deputy Grand Matron Mary Ida Bonser leads arrangements with chapters from Mankel Zephyr Bangs Cross Plains Brownwood Santa Anna Coleman Indian Creek.
The Sidney pep squad will sponsor a bake sale Saturday March 8 at Higginbotham's starting at 9 a.m. Cakes pies cookies cu cakes and candy will be sold. Everyone come.
Comanche students will not attend classes Friday because teachers will hold a district meeting. The schedule disruption affects all grade levels and campus operations for the day.
The Upper Leon River Municipal Water District reports clean test results from the new Lake Proctor facility. Water is pumped to storage then distributed by city crews aboard a functioning plant with plans for an open house and future finish work.
The CHS Indians travel to Brady for the Brady Relays with high hopes to defend their district title. Prelims start at 12 30 p m and finals at 7 p m. Events list runners sprinters hurdlers and field competitors led by Randy Nelms Travis Welch Marion Kirkland Ray Dudley and others in 12 events including relays and jumps.
Gustine 33 4 season leads 19B 2B champs play Abbott 26 7 in Tarleton gym Stephenville at 8 15 with finals set for 15 Saturday night at TSC gym. Other Friday games include Trent Locust? at 3 30 Tolar Byers 4 45 Brock Talpa Centennial 7 00.
Nearly 2,009 teachers are expected for the annual Mid-Texas Education Assn District XV convention in Brownwood. Mrs. Van’ta Martin of Brownwood is president with Marguerite Ross of Comanche as NEA membership chairman. General session Friday opens at 9:30 a.m. under the theme All Eyes Are on Education. House of Delegates gathers March 6 at 6:30 p.m. at Chisholm’s Restaurant.
Five men face felony charges after a grand jury in the 52nd District Court returned indictments on forgery and passing, burglary, theft, and driving while intoxicated. Names withheld pending service on defendants. The panel recessed after a brief session.
Six new directors were elected for the 1969 70 Chamber of Commerce year. They are Jerry Vines Bill Day James Mercer Bob Arthur A R Preach Horton and Bill Stewart. They join holdover director Jim Roberts and ex officio retiring president Bill Clemons. Voters also decided on holidays with most listed approved except November 11 Veterans Day with 52 percent opposing doors closing. Christmas two days discussed.
