The Comanche Chief reports Congressman Thomas L. Blanton questions the feasibility of the Townsend pension proposal. He calls for a sane pension policy while noting the plan would cost about 24 trillion annually, far beyond current revenues.
Ed R Ligin 87 local ranchman died at his home three miles west of Comanche Wednesday after two weeks with double pneumonia. Funeral services held Thursday at First Methodist Church with Rev M S Leveridge officiating. Interment in Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers Otis Clayton Jack Clayton Hollis Burton Shorty Massingill Wade Everidge and F R Armstrong. Ligin born December 27 1897 in Mills County Big Valley raised there. He married Ruth Bryson about eight years ago and lived on Charlie Bryson Ranch.
Regional championship games this weekend lead to the state tournament scheduled for March 8 and 9 in Austin. The event brings together top teams for a decisive basketball championship.
The Cross Timins Review reports Callahan County Commissioners pledged to issue time warrants to buy right of way for Highway 56 from the Gulf Coast through Plains to Abilene. County action could unlock construction, with Highway Commissioner W R Ely saying a contract would follow if land is secured, as other counties along the route have already obtained rights of way.
A Fort Worth Roundup Club delegation of 33 business leaders visited Comanche on Thursday to promote the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show set for March 16 to 24 in Fort Worth. They also reminded locals of the Arlington Downs races from March 28 to April 20. Charles G. Cotten and Floyd L. Carmichall led the group.
Ex-Governor Miriam A Ferguson paid 95.00 for a Texas Centennial fifty cent piece. The sale aids a Memorial Museum at Austin and is promoted by the American Legion. The top statewide bid was 109.00 by Z F Marvin of Dallas.
Brownwood Bulletin reports representative Courtney Gray from Brown and Coleman counties introduces a constitutional amendment to limit the governors pardoning power and fix parole board size and tenure. The measure cleared committee and awaits first reading, with expectations that similar bills from other parties will merge for a final proposal.
Sabano Methodist Church on the De Leon Circuit will plant a five acre peanut crop in 1935 to raise funds for the church budget. Members will work the crop to cover running expenses.
Fifteen employees of Community Public Service Corporation attended a safety meeting at Comanche and a banquet at Ridgeway Hotel last Friday. After the banquet the Kangaroo Court fined several workers for safety rule violations. another meeting is set for the second Tuesday night in March.
A collection of eight hundred North American Indian relics will be exhibited next Thursday through Saturday in the Texas Power and Light Building in Comanche. The show, under the Wesley Bible Class, belongs to Rev A B Butterfield of Childress and Frank Runkles of Gustine. Butterfield, a missionary for over 40 years among the Comanche Kiowa and Apache, will lecture daily and explain the displays. The exhibit includes prehistoric and modern artifacts such as arrow and spear points stone picks and chisels.
Mrs. Julia Hawes Gafford was a 90 year old longtime Methodist and organizer of the Eastern Star Chapter in Comanche. She died Thursday in a Fort Worth hospital and was buried in Indian Creek Cemetery after services.
Senator E M Davis of Brownwood and three other senators introduced a bill in the Senate to raise county commissioners pay on a graduated scale from 1200 to 4200 annually. Comanche County would gain 1500 yearly with other counties tied to valuations and daily rates. Davis also filed a bill to outlaw bookmaking on horse races with penalties for offenders.
A Senate committee in Austin recommended submitting a joint resolution to repeal state liquor prohibition. The Associated Press reports wets and drys united under Democratic and Administration pressure in the Senate Constitutional Amendment committee.
An announcement in the Free Press says a Free Fall Fair featuring livestock and farm exhibits will be held in De Leon in September. Organizers aim to make the event the biggest there in several years.
Lamkin defeats De Leon 22 to 12 to clinch the Boys Interscholastic League Championship in the final three game series at Dublin last week. De Leon won the second game 13 to 12 after Lamkin opened with a 14 to 4 victory at Lamkin.
In The First State Bank of Gustine vs J W Carter Jr and Jesse Harrison in Justice George C Wetzel’s Court a verdict favored Carter but the bank was given judgment against Harrison for the amount sued. The case marked Wetzel’s first jury-less debt trial and his first suit.
Brownwood High School repeats as district champions by defeating Coleman 25 to 23 in District 8 at the Howard Payne College Gym. Brownwood advances to the Region 2 tournament in Abilene to face Coin Crews and Tuscola, continuing a push toward regional honors.
The Ex Rangers Association of Texas plans annual gatherings in Santa Anna with a lodge site chosen there. George B. Black of Comanche says the lodge, under State construction, features native stone and will host future encampments and a speaker's stand with a band stand. The encampment date is to be announced.
Comanche state rep R. A. Luker urges the Texas Legislature to keep farmers in mind as tax payers and voters while noting procedural delays. He cites Feb 27 approval of a 10 minute slot for T C Richardson on soil erosion and questions whether lawmakers value farmers beyond tax use.
City of Gorman and T. 8. Ross purchased a railroad setup for gravel removal from river beds. The package includes 150 feet of double track and two dump cars, movable between beds. Each trip will haul about two yards, reducing gravel costs for street work.
Smith Heath Post No 471 of De Leon will hold a special meeting on the first Thursday night in March. A big turkey supper with all trimmings is planned along with visiting buddies and an invitation to all Legionnaires and ex service men.
Representative Tom Blanton recounts a football related ankle injury blamed on a 40 year old memory. He says the sprain surfaced after a fall at the University of Texas during his student days and attributes it to a rival seeing his girlfriend. The incident was related on the House floor as he spoke on crutches.
Dr W M Hilley a prominent Comanche County physician died early Monday at his Sidney home after a three week illness. Funeral services were held at the Sidney Baptist Church with Rev Jos Isbell officiating and burial in Stagg Creek Cemetery. He was born in Georgia September 5 1875 and came to Texas in 1892 with his parents S M Hilley. He studied medicine in Memphis Tennessee and began practicing.
Voters in Stephenville defeated a proposed bond issue for a municipal light plant by 219 to 46 percent against, ending months of debate over the project.
