Pete Stone 38 of De Leon was seriously injured when a stick of dynamite exploded in his hand while blasting driftwood from a swimming hole on the Stone place east of De Leon. He lost his right arm and a thumb, with additional leg and body injuries, and was taken by ambulance to Dublin hospital in serious condition though not expected to be fatal.
Comanche blanked Priddy 5 0 Gustine handed Gorman its first loss 8 6 Stephenville defeated Mullin 11 0 The four teams share two wins and one loss heading into this week’s clashes with Comanche at Gustine Stephenville at Gorman Mullin versus Priddy June 26.
Comanche County Agricultural Agent W. K. Frey announces a public hearing at 10 o clock Monday morning June 30 in the Comanche County Courthouse. The session will discuss 2 4 D and 2 4 5 T regulations, their impact on mesquite and brush control, and allow farmers ranchers and merchants to ask questions and state objections.
The East Side Missionary Baptist Church in Comanche has called Bruce Thomas of Gorman as pastor and seeks admission to the Missionary Baptist Association. Thomas begins a revival on Sunday evening June 29 with services at 10:00 Sunday School 11:00 preaching and 8:00 revival and weekly Bible study on Wednesdays.
Mrs. Lewis Cunningham and Mr and Mrs Rea T Hoff of Comanche attended the funeral of Rev B K Tenny in Fort Worth Tuesday. Rev Tenny a former pastor at the First Presbyterian Church in Comanche was a cousin of the Hoff family.
Lloyd Biggs and Jerry Gregory attended Boys State Week in Austin where 461 Junior class boys learned about state government. Lloyd won second in high jump and Jerry was chosen as a returning Junior Counselor for next year.
State Representative Jack Cox of Breckenridge spoke at the Comanche Lions Club on Americanism praising the American way of life. The address, shown with slogans on a blackboard, has been delivered to over 100 clubs and recently to the Comanche American Legion, drawing applause.
Two elections in Comanche Independent School District at City Hall tested bond and tax issues after annexation of Fairview. Bond assumption passed 51 to 2, tax acceptance 52 to 4 while district keeps the $1.50 rate. fifty-eight votes cast.
The Comanche Chief will publish a day early next week due to the Fourth of July. Mails will carry the issue on Wednesday instead of Thursday so all residents will receive the paper by midweek. Advertisements and news copy are requested promptly.
Curtis Wilson, Comanche Rt 1 farmer and rancher, drilled an artesian well on a creek near his home to 61 feet last week. The well flows an inch and a quarter per second. He is building a dam to hold the water and believes the flow will stay strong for a useful purpose.
De Leon Texas plans a full day July 4th concert led by Minnie Pearl from Nashville with Moon Mullican Slim Whitman and Texas Wranglers. Six quartets including Blackwell Brothers and Ranger Quartet perform. Event at Hodges Park with free entry for children under 12 and $1 for others. Concession staffed by the local fire department.
Comanche County reports unpaid state and county taxes with about 94 percent collected from an estimated 11.8 million valuation. Absentee voting boxes adopt a new law with ballots tallied by a canvassing board at the county clerk’s office, with governor race tallies by precincts for general election day.
Sidney Methodist Church and friends will hold cottage prayer meetings starting Monday June 30 at 8 00 p m. This is the first of four services before the revival starting Friday July 4 and closing Sunday July 13.
Mr and Mrs W C Lowery of Comanche plan to leave this week for Washington State where they will spend the summer visiting relatives.
Vollie Jackson of Comanche, ex sheriff, was appointed acting City Marshal by the City Council on Tuesday. Sam Duke, elected City Marshal in April 1951, has been away about two weeks, turning over keys and gun to City Night Watchman Kerley to seek work in Odessa. City Secretary E L Curb says Duke has not sent official notice.
The Comanche All Star softball squad travels to face the Mackey Sporting Goods nine in Abilene on Saturday night at 8 15. Abilene Softballers, mostly college players, boast one loss this season and have faced top West Texas teams. Comanche also has a strong record led by Curt Lemons and his no hit streaks in recent starts.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Rea of Comanche attended the funeral services for Rev. Tinney former Comanche Presbyterian minister in Fort Worth on Tuesday Rev Tinney is the brother in law of Mr Rea.
