Comanche Scouts led by Jack Wheat and Carl Brumbelow collected about 5,000 pounds of scrap paper over the weekend earning $24.35 from Sol Hoffman, a local scrap dealer. Funds will aid the Scout house near the City reservoir. another drive is planned in six weeks as paper remains vital to the war effort.

Two youths fatally injured after night highway accident
Felton Biggs and Billie Humphrey, 14 and 13, sleeping on the Gustine Coman highway five miles west of Gustine, were struck by an eastbound pickup driven by Earl Kelley. Biggs was admitted to a Dallas hospital. Humphrey remained seriously injured.

Claborn Willy Kerley of the US Navy earned a commendation for conspicuous gallantry in rescuing survivors from a torpedoed merchant vessel in the South Pacific. Sergeant Dulan Andress of Hamlin was killed in action in Italy on June 1, 1944, according to his mother visiting Beattie. He was 22, grandson of Uncle Billie Keith of Beattie, with parents residing in Hamlin. Comanche County war bond drive reports show $112,446 raised of a $460,000 goal, urging residents to buy bonds to support the armed forces and reach the county total, which had previously recorded $487,000 in the final car.
