A district court grand jury met in Comanche with Judge W J Oxford presiding in place of ill Judge R B Cross. The Comanche Roping Club announces June 27 28 and 29 as the dates for the 1957 Eighteenth Annual Amateur Rodeo with Lloyd Woodley of Lampasas promoting. The event features bareback bronc cow milking wild horse racing calf roping girls and boys events with 75 cent and 1 25 admission. Jaycees will decorate and run concessions to boost the festive mood.
Coach Mike Murphy and wife Louise resign from Comanche High School to take head athletic and homemaking posts at Castleberry School in Fort Worth. They plan to move in August with son Mickey, a noted CHS freshman athlete. Castleberry will enroll over 1,000 students and compete at AAA level next season. Applications for CHS coaching job are already arriving.
Comanche prepares a 1957 Learn To Swim program with Junior and Senior Life Saving courses starting Monday at Lake Eanes pool. City and American Red Cross sponsor, with lifesaving class daily for five days, a water safety aide course next week, and July instruction, under Gayle McNutt.
Comanche High stars Ted Hicks and Bruce Couch signed letters of intent to join Arlington State College Rebels. Hicks, 17, a standout quarterback and versatile athlete, and Couch, a three-year letterman and team captain, will join Arlington as contributors after strong seasons. Also joining are Calvin Lee and Dalton Hicks, with Lee a Junior College All-America back and Dalton Hicks as a noted end.
In Comanche County, 46 farm families are using Farmers Home Administration farm ownership loans to buy or improve their holdings. The county supervisor, Robert C. Toon, notes the first loan was in 1940 and about 68 families have used this loan since then. Typical farms bought a decade ago ranged 100 to 160 acres, while those funded in 1956 and 1957 average 250 acres or more. Loans can run up to 40 years, with most families repaying in 10 to 20 years.
A telegram to the Comanche Chief reports the Public Works Bill for Fiscal Year 1958 approved $100,009 for Proctor Reservoir planning. The message is from Congressman Omar Burleson’s office. Mr and Mrs J D Nabers of Fort Worth spent the week end in Comanche visiting relatives.
After ten days of play Durham's Toppers and the Saints top the standings with 2 0 records. Danny Cagle pitched one hit as the Toppers beat Dudley's 8 2, and Leon Sledge led the Saints to an 18 7 win over the Raiders. League games resume next Tuesday after conflicts with Boy Scouts and band camp.
