Relaxed Crop Rules Boost Nonirrigated Set-Aside Planting
The USDA revised rules to ease planting on nonirrigated set-aside land for eight crops including guar, sunflower, sesame, castor beans, mustard seed, safflower, crambe, and plantae ovata. The change waives the usual ten dollar per acre farm payment reduction, encouraging more trials in Texas. Extension agronomist Ben Spears notes adaptability and markets limit choices but expect more experimentation. Local county agricultural agents can provide gear and trial planting information.
