Grady Jones of Oakland heads to Atlantic coast naval training as a musician after a brief visit with his grandmother. Luther Marshall joins a local training camp’s bugle corps. Four Gustine youths Leslie Cooper Carroll Dillard Otho Walker and Oran Albin sail to Dallas to enlist in the navy. J D Miller Jr who trained near Gustine joins Company 1 Engineers at Camp Funston and may see active service in France. Comanche County Canning School Plans Demonstrations

The Comanche County Canning School begins at 9 30 a m on Tuesday June 5 and runs four days at the skating rink near the square. Sessions are 9 30 to 12 and 1 30 to 4 30 daily with demonstrations in canning led by state specialists including Mrs L J Kittle Mrs Sally Belle Hickey Miss Clara Rea and Miss Iola Hooker all noted as top authorities in domestic science and county clubs. Residents urged to attend with pencils for notes and recipes.

Four Days Canning Program Opens with Ladies Demonstrations

On June 5 morning a government lady demonstrator leads lectures and demos on canning berries, tuna greens with bacon, and other produce. Mrs. Kittle and Miss Rea give talks and show canning beans corn cucumbers peas tomatoes and peppers. Mrs. Hickey covers jams and jellies and additional canning of corn.

On the third day of June 7th there is a lecture by Miss Hooker featuring demonstrations of canning all fruits including peaches plums grapes pears and more. Additional demonstrations cover pepper squash beets and okra with guidance on making canned soups and pickle ing of peppers.

Comanche Chautauqua a Decided Success

Comanche's first Chautauqua ended Saturday night with a master musical program by the Kitties Band. Good crowds from out of town attended every program and guarantors met all expenses. The event featured Castelucci Milano Serenaders, Potter DePew Musical Co, Alf Taylor lectures, Hungarian Ladies Quartet, Dr A F Robertson and Dr H B Adams, Berkeley Sextet, Miss Pearl ONeal, Jamie Minur dancer, and the renowned Kitties Band whose performances energized the crowd from start to finish. The Chautauqua offered a rare opportunity to hear top American talent and organizers look forward to a return next year.

Comanche County Woodmen Assn will meet in Gustine on Friday June 8 1917. A splendid program has been prepared with ritualistic contests at night. All degree teams are expected to attend and each camp should send representatives. Hon Lewis Wilson of Dallas will deliver an daytime address.

Comanche Pastor Earns Th D Degree

Rev. Geo A Curlee will receive his Doctor of Theology degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. He studied at Fort Worth Seminary earning a Master of Theology, then completed remaining work after a year in Louisville. Mrs Curlee also holds a BA and BO from Bowling Green Kentucky.

Surprise Picnic Honored Miss Gene St. Clair Birthday

Mrs. C. P. St. Clair hosted a Wednesday picnic luncheon for Miss Gene St. Clair turning 1st in a day of costumes. Friends from Cleburne and Shreveport joined, with soldiers Quaker maids ranch girls and young companions. The group traveled to Fleming's park for lunch and outdoor games, returning home late in the evening.

School Board Elects Two New Faculty Members

The Comanche School Board elected Miss Cleo Herring to a grade school position and Prof. H F E Waggoner as principal of the Grammar school department. Herring is regarded as a top county teacher from Comanche and Waggoner hails from Quanah with a Baylor education and strong reputation.

Bob Mitchell Transferred to Fort Worth Post Office

Robert Mitchell a mail clerk at the local post office has been transferred to the Fort Worth office and left this week to assume duties. N. W. Storey of the Fort Worth office will take his place here. Storey is well known locally, having lived here several years.

Local Comanche merchants financed a bulk purchase of tin cans for Comanche County residents. A 45 thousand can shipment will be sold at actual cost with no profit, available through S. Harris or J. W. Fin Demonstration Agent. Orders should be placed promptly to secure cans in time.

Big Gun Shoot Opens in Comanche State

The Mid-Texas Gun Shoot begins June 5 at 9 o'clock at the gun club grounds. It will be among the largest events in the state with 300 out of town participants. Big prizes and a $500 distributed prize pool attract top shooters, and the Comanche club earns praise for organizing a statewide showcase.
