Ensign C. B. Williams of Comanche is commended by Commander Patrol Wings U S Pacific Fleet for service as Communication Watch Officer at Midway during the Battle of Midway from May 29 to June 4 1942. He performed duties with high efficiency under fire contributing to the island base forces.

County War Bond Quota Set For July

The Treasury sets a July War Bond goal at one billion dollars nationwide with Texas allotted 33.677 million and Comanche County 40.8 thousand. Local notices urge oversubscription beyond the 21 percent achieved so far and praise Hawaii and Alaska overages while urging community support and duty. Hilley Missing In Action After Fall Of Bataan

Lt Gayle Hilley son of Mr and Mrs A A Hilley of Sidney is listed missing in action by the War Department after last contact ten days before the Fall of Bataan. A War Department letter notes no entry in evacuation lists and confirms missing in action status until twelve months pass.

Chief Will Give Election Returns

The Comanche Chief will handle Election Returns Saturday from across the county using a bulletin board in front of The Chief. County Chairman R. L. Lane will have headquarters there the night of the election and presiding officers must report counts to him at No. 2 by telephone or in person.

New Tires And Tubes Issued In Comanche County

A list from the Comanche County War Rationing and Price Administration Board shows eligible applicants receiving tires and tubes July 15. The entries cover Truck Tires and Tubes, Passenger Tires and Tubes, Retreads for Truck Tires, and Obsolete Type Tires with names and numbers for each recipient.

First Melons Sold Saturday in Comanche County

The first truckload of Comanche County watermelons sold Saturday for $1.25 per 100 pounds. Hub ert Atterbury, three miles east, sold to Jess Stone of De Leon. Melons averaged 32 pounds with a 50 pound largest fruit. another load sold Saturday afternoon. The 1942 crop will be far short of normal, with several loads this week but no steady market yet.

Wests Welcome Baby Sidney Joann in Kingsville

Mr and Mrs W E West announce the arrival of a daughter born July 16 in a Kingsville hospital. The baby is named Sidney Joann. Mrs West is the former Madeline Porter, daughter of Mr and Mrs W H Porter of Gustine and niece of Mrs G S Clarke of Comanche. The Wests recently moved to Kingsville where he took a Civil Service post.

Captain Morris of Air Corps Safe in Australia

Mr and Mrs Earl Morris of Sipe Springs report their son Captain N G Morris of the United States Air Corps is safe in Australia. He has been there since Japan began its southward advance and recently made a forced landing, sustaining a slight injury and staying eight days in a hospital.

De Leon Store Manager Gaston Grisham Dead at 14 Years Service

De Leon residents learned of the sudden death of Gaston Grisham, manager of the men s department at Higginbothams, after fourteen years with the firm. He was a prominent county figure and funeral services were conducted in De Leon Wednesday afternoon.

Program For Livestock Assa Meeting Aug. 7

The Program Committee for the annual barbecue and membership meeting of the Camanche County Livestock Association presents informed practical men on poultry, hog, dairy, sheep, and beef breeders and feeders topics. The program starts at 3:30 PM Friday August 7 at the tabernacle in Lake Eanes Park with barbecue served at 6:30 PM for members wives and invited guests.

Absentee Ballots Cast in Comanche County

County Clerk Claudia Fisher reports 135 absentee ballots cast in Comanche County on Wednesday. Some ballots sent earlier may still be returned if postmarked before July 22, allowing their votes. This compares with 57 absentee votes in the previous election.
