Gas Pipe Laying Progress Report in Coke Town

The laying of gas pipes in Coke Town is progressing well according to Mr. Todd. Six carloads of pipe have arrived and ditching is set to begin Tuesday. Pipes are being placed on many streets and crews work faster than expected despite weather, with gas anticipated before year’s end.

Comanche baseball opens the county league at Gustine after a 17 to 4 loss. The team vows a stronger lineup today at home as two players, Carl Stewart and Henry Gore, delivered two hits each. A large crowd is hoped for the season opener with renewed confidence.

Band Concert Draws Large Crowd At Courthouse

A second concert and children's playnight drew a large audience last Friday evening at the courthouse area. Children romped and played while parents and siblings listened to the band and music. John P Hoff and D K Doyte gave short talks.

Brownwood Cow Sets Record as Milker Carrie

Brownwood Jersey cow Carrie of Brownwood Texas owned by Jack Shelton completed a 365 day test producing 580.65 pounds of fat and 9191 pounds of milk with no daily milkings. She carried a calf 189 days and averaged 6.32 percent fat. The record qualified her for the American Jersey Cattle Club register.

The 16 mile stretch between Blanket and Brownwood is being straightened and placed in class condition, a project carried this week in the Dallas News.

Agricultural Club Boys Encampment At De Leon

The Agricultural Club Boys hold their annual encampment at De Leon July 15 and 16. Eight clubs in the county with 180 members will attend. Boys should bring dinner for day one and camping gear. Gather at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the newspaper office, then march to Prof. Forrest's farm for stock grain and poultry judging. trips to select farms planned.

Barry Brothers to Furnish Rumble Power for Humble Oil

Barry Brothers of Comanche sign contract to supply Humble Oil & Refining Co with 150 horsepower electric power from Aransas Pass plant for use at Ingleside tank farm. A 360 horsepower engine will be installed and five to six miles of highline built, with total project cost around $35,000.

Vacation Bible School Opens at Presbyterian Church

The Interdenominational Vacation Bible School began Monday at the Presbyterian church with about 50 attendees. Miss Suella Starr of San Antonio leads the program, with teachers including Mesdames Frank Palmer, Y. W. Holmes, Mamie Franklin, B. F. Hearne, and Misses Ruby Grainger and Mildred Wynne. The two week session runs 8:30 to 11:20 daily for children ages 4 to 14 from all denominations, inviting parents to visit. curriculum covers Bible stories songs games and handwork.

Revival at First Baptist Church Opens July 18

The annual revival at the First Baptist Church of Comanche will begin Sunday July 18 and last at least two weeks. The Rev Whatley of Brownwood, renowned preacher, will lead the services with Dr Forrest Maddox, the pastor, directing singing and music with the Baptist orchestra. Rev Wilson Fielder, on furlough from China work, is expected to attend part of the revival, boosting community interest. All meetings will be held in the new church building. Beautify Park on Holiday in Comanche Draws Hundreds

Hundreds of Comanche residents spent a holiday cleaning and improving the new city park led by Mayor J Ranes the Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Two bath houses diving boards and ongoing improvements boosted attractions for summer then crowds picnicked and swam as the city plans to donate the park for public use and tourism.

How Comanche County Voted in July 1924

Vote tallies show governor and attorney general choices across Comanche city and county. In the city, Lynch Davidson leads governor with 3965 votes. Ferguson 312. Barton 89. other candidates split smaller totals. Attorney General results favor Moody with 445 and McCall 204. Countywide governor totals show Ferguson 1558 and Lynch Davidson 1042 amid broader candidate counts. Attorney General totals place Moody at 1550 and McCall at 896 with Ward and Melson trailing.

Cotton Fleas Appear In Fields Near Duster

County agent Barton reports a new pest in the Duster area called cotton fleas. He inspected five cotton fields where plants are knee high and show extensive damage. The fleas attack the square as it forms, causing fruit loss.

First Comanche County Melons Here Monday

The first Comanche county grown melons were placed on the market on July 4. Grown by J. F. Kerley three miles east of Comanche, the Black Diamond variety. A second load was brought to town Tuesday from about a half acre patch. Melons weigh about thirty pounds and sell for 35 cents in a local grocery.

Baptist Revival Under Way at Sidney Tabernacle

Dr. Forrest Maddox leads a revival at Sidney tabernacle with two daily services at 10:30 am and 8:00 pm. An out of town preacher will fill the pulpit during his Sunday absence.

Odom to Enter Auto Supply Business at Brownwood

W C Odom a longtime Comanche resident traded his farm for an automobile supply house in Brownwood and will begin operations there soon. Mr Whitefield who traded with Odom will relocate to a new farm seven miles south. The Odom family leaves behind many friends in Comanche and the Chief newspaper shares the regret.

Arthur Collins Dies in Fort Worth Auto Crash

Arthur Collins 82, noted Fort Worth attorney and University Club president, died after his car overturned on the Arlington road near Masonic Home and School. He had led Comanche High School class of 1910, studied at Texas and Yale, served as a lieutenant in WWI, and practiced law in Fort Worth for six years. Interment was in Fort Worth.

Big Beets Grow in Comanche Town Garden

A Comanche resident, D. Hampton, sent in a colossal beet grown in the east part of town. The giant tipped the scales at roughly 101/2 pounds after being planted last fall. Hampton also produced many large beets of ordinary size and nearly uniform shape for comparison.

Almost Perfectly Formed Fruit Grown Near Comanche

Comanche County fans celebrated a fine fruit display as Lake Springstead near Comanche presented peaches of Mamie Ross and Governor Hogg varieties and large red June apples. The editor noted the fruit’s beauty and credited arsenic of lead spraying for pest control.
