In Comanche bright listings promote a rodeo crowd around 200 contestants and a Saturday night parade. Local ads boast anniversary sales at Perry's and fabric center bargains at Evridge and Evans Company with tire deals, auto loans, and window displays inviting shoppers to visit Baxter's and Goodson stores this weekend.
Dr H H Galbraith optometrist and civic leader was installed as president of the Comanche Lions Club at the last meeting. Sam Cleveland of Stephenville served as installing officer. Galbraith, also a Comanche Chamber of Commerce director, was promoted from vice president to club head. The club now counts 141 members.
Carl Alton Hardin a 51 year old retired U S Seaman was found dead July 2 in his four room frame home on Lake Comanche. Justice of Peace O A Brazier estimated death from natural causes about 24 hours prior. Coroner records note the last living sighting by Bob Burton on June 26 after a minnows errand and a June 30 sighting by Mrs Dale Shoemaker. Funeral services were held July 3 at Board Church with Rev S J Isham officiating. Hardin born May 16 1904 in Hasse Texas served in the Navy 1929 1949 and married Ophelia Carver after moving to Comanche. Survivors include brother Merlin Hardin and sister Opal McDonald.
Dr Roy D Mims has purchased half interest in the Blackwood Clinic Hospital in Comanche joining Dr W D Blackwood. The sale to take effect August 15 1955 with continued operation under Blackwood and Mims.
Members of Comanche Electric Cooperative Association are invited to a meeting at Gustine Auditorium on Monday July 11 to nominate candidates for the Board of Directors. Terms are staggered. two directors serve two year terms and from Comanche County, with officers including W J Pettit and Weeden paying. Refreshments will be served.
M F Manchester, local Church of Christ preacher, will start a gospel meeting at the Church of Christ in De Leon on Friday evening July 8, continuing through July 17. Services begin at 8 p.m. Dwain Dennis of Hamilton will preach July 10 and 17 in Manchester’s absence. Everyone is invited to attend each session.
Comanche prepared for a three night rodeo starting Thursday with a 200 entrant field and top stock from Lloyd Woodley. Parade opens at 5 with High School Band leading. coronation by State Rep Bill Chambers Friday. Events include bareback, calf roping, bronc busting and trick acts by Dee Barbee and Vicki Pipes. Admission 75c children, 1.25 adults. 3,200 seats and ample standing room.
Higginbothams remain in first place in the Comanche Little League with a 6 win 2 loss record as the season winds down. The Merchantmen defeated the Saints 8 to 5 after leading 8 to 4, while the Raiders beat the Saints 14 to 10. Tuesday, First Baptist A’s rallied to a 5-4 win over the Dudley Brothers in a well played game. Upcoming games include Pony League at Comanche Lumberjacks vs Summers and Sherrod, and Toppers versus Raiders while Higginbothams face the Raiders.
There will be a cemetery working at Baggett on Friday July 15. All interested in the upkeep of the cemetery are urged to participate.
Debbie Sue Steele, daughter of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Lee Steele of Comanche, was born July 2 at 3 07 am at Medical Arts Hospital in Brownwood. Maternal grandfather is David Lee Smart of Brownwood and paternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs Leonard Steele of Comanche.
A list of contestants filed with Parade Marshal Jimmy Carpenter for the Comanche Amateur Rodeo Queen title. The contest remains open with more girls expected to join Thursday at 5 PM in the parade for the chance to reign over the 1955 rodeo. Names include Aisna Bramalott, Betty Hayes, Vicki Pipes, Barbara Terrell, and Amity Virginia Cason among others.
