Commissioners Set 1943 Assessment Values in Comanche County

The Comanche County Commissioners Court set 1943 assessment values at a Monday meeting. P A Pettit, Assessor-Collector of Taxes, released figures showing values for livestock and vehicles by year, including horses at 60 percent, cattle at 30 dollars per head, sheep two dollars, goats one dollar, broad leaves twenty dollars, autos from 300 dollars for 1942 down to 25 dollars for older makes, and tractors taxed similarly with age-based deductions.

C. M. Albin, Comanche ranchman, topped Fort Worth mutton market Monday January 25. He sold yearling mutton at 13.50 dollars per 108 pounds with average weights around 94 pounds. The flock was fed out on the Albin Ranch south of Comanche.

Final date for poll taxes in 1943 voting year

Sunday marks the last day to pay taxes without interest or penalties and for poll tax payments to qualify for the 1943 vote. The assessor's office closes Sunday, so payments are due Saturday January 30. mail payments count if postmarked January 31. Delinquent taxes incur charges, and poll taxes must be paid to maintain eligibility.

Several real estate deals were made in Comanche last week. Herbert Williams sold his home at 700 West Wright Avenue to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Durham Sr. Durham bought 706 West College Avenue from Gibb Callaway about 20 years ago and sold later to Williams. J C P St Clair bought 204 West Paine Avenue from Mrs. Herbert Goodson for 1900 dollars. Shirley Tackette sold 362 West Martin Avenue to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hart for 2400 dollars. Several other deals are pending.

Brownwood Driver Arrested for Driving While Drunk

S Darwin, a Brownwood truck driver, was arrested Tuesday afternoon by Sheriff Perry St. Clair one mile west of Comanche on the Brownwood Highway. He was charged with intoxication and was taken into custody.

Sharp Decline in Comanche County Mortgages 1942 Report

County Clerk Miss Claudia Fisher told the Commissioner's Court that 1942 saw a drop in mortgages compared with 1941. Chattel mortgages fell from 5,594 to 3,658. marriage licenses eased from 252 to 213 and instruments filed from 2,098 to 1,787, though total county work rose due to birth certificate corrections.
