Visiting County Agent Ernesto Arias to Work in Comanche

Ernesto Arias from Costa Rica will join Comanche County as Visiting County Agent for about ten months. He earned a 1949 BS in Agriculture from Texas A&M and a 1952 MS in Aeronomy from the University of Costa Rica. Arias and his wife have five children and he asks for welcome letters to arrive by January 26 at Texas A&M.

Hall Seeks Justice of Peace Seat After Brazier Death

J H Hall, recently named Justice of Peace for Precinct 1 Comanche, seeks Democratic nomination for the unexpired term. He urges voters to consider him at the May 2 primary, noting past service on the City Council and six years as mayor, and emphasizes duty to constituents.

Salvation Army Committee Cited For Notable Work

Dan Eddy director of the Salvation Army service unit in Dalley commended the Comanche Service Unit for its 1963 welfare program. The report highlights emergency aid to families including groceries, shoes, medicine, hospital care, camp placements, lodging and utility assistance. The Comanche Committee chaired by Herbert Goodson with members E A Kerby Jr Ruth Loudermilk Elza Brinson Bill Dudney Sheriff Belve Bean and Kathleen Eads oversees operations, with Eads also Summer Camp Chairman. The unit is a participating agency in the Comanche United Fund.

February Is Heart Month in 1960s Lions event

Diseases of the heart caused 954 870 deaths in the United States in 1962 highlighting the need for Heart Fund support. The weekend of Heart Sunday Feb 23 marks a peak in awareness. Waggoner Carr and Ben Barnes will speak at the Lions Club banquet Feb 25 at 7 pm in J B Layne Elementary School cafeteria on Ladies Night with Lions officials attending.

28th Annual Junior Livestock Show Southdown Winners

In the 28th Annual Junior Livestock Show held last weekend, Southdown and Southdown Cross class winners were Lonnie Sparkman Gustine FFA first, Landon Ross De Leon FFA second, Don Parks Comanche 4-H third, Dusty Miller De Leon FFA fourth, and Garland Bingham De Leon FFA fifth. Service Drug received 30 dollars per cwt as prize for placement.

Memorial fund started for Martha Chilton Church

A living memorial fund of 1000 dollars was created by William C. and Guido B. Chilton for the Central Christian Church Comanche Texas. The money will be deposited at State National Bank Comanche and used for noble charitable educational and Christian purposes as directed by the church board.

Chili Supper Planned by Burton Bible Class

The Burton Bible Class of The First Methodist Church sponsors a chili supper on Wednesday January 29. Home made chili crackers and a drink offered for 50 cents from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the church basement. Tickets available from class members or at the church.

Five Gas and Oil Discoveries In County In 1963

Comanche County recorded five oil and gas finds in 1963. Tex-Star Oil and Gas No 1 north west of Custer yielded 30 barrels daily of 41 gravity oil from Marble Falls at 275? to 2803 feet. Coastal States Gas Producing No 1 J B Gray west of De Leon flowed 10.8 million cu ft daily through 2951 to 2982 feet. Coastal States No 1 Jimmie Wright east of Sipe Springs flowed 10.6 million cu ft daily at 2563 feet. Pettit No 3 A A C Pettit, Lousia Pamplin Survey south west of Energy produced 33 barrels daily plus 10 percent water from Marble Falls at 2760 to 2794 feet. Co O Terrell No 1 east of Custer flowed 3.8 million cu ft daily through 2670 to 2 BEN feet.

Miller seeks Comanche County Commissioner Precinct 3 seat

Lamkin resident Homer Miller, longtime former commissioner for Precinct 3, announced a new bid to reclaim the post. He cites his 12 year record 1948 to 1960 and seeks support from Precinct 3 and county voters.

Indians Beat Granbury to Tie 8-AA Lead

The Comanche Indians upset Granbury 63 44 to pull into a three way 8-AA share atop the standings with Granbury and Cisco at 4 1 after the first round. Indian boys led 12 9 first period and 27 11 at halftime, then widened the gap. Hugh Fletcher with 19 points paced Comanche while Billy Williams added 16 and Tommy Willis 10. Granbury and Cisco also sit atop the district with 4 1 records as the girls’ games produced a 42 39 Granbury win over the Indians junior varsity and kept Granbury undefeated in district play. The Indians’ next game is at home against De Leon after an open date Friday. The CHS girls’ trip to Hamilton is planned for Friday night.
