Louise Evans Tax Assessor Collector lists venues and days in the coming sequence to issue voter qualification materials and assist Comanche County residents in registering to vote. The itinerary outlines where and when she will be available to help potential voters.
The notice lists appointment slots across multiple days in January at F&M Bank De Leon Duster Store Downing Store Sipe Springs Store Hasse Store Proctor Piez Carter Office Sidney Denny Store First State Bank Gustine with times from morning to afternoon across Tuesday to Wednesday and into Friday Monday Tuesday Wednesday.
A rash of two car accidents injured several local residents. Miss Lillie Brantley and Mrs. D. D. Rasco were hospitalized in De Leon in satisfactory condition after a collision at the Austin and Grand intersection. Rufus Brantley and Ricardo Gutierrez escaped serious injuries in a Comanche crash near Comanche Square. Royce A. Brantley, injured in a separate collision near Proctor, remained hospitalized in De Leon. Chester W. and Mrs. McKinzie were in Stephenville ICU after a crash on U.S. Highway 67-377 three miles west of Dublin. Kyler Slee was treated and released in Stephenville. Patrolman Mike Watkins investigated all incidents.
Kenneth Fred Phifer, 47, of Comanche, died after a two car collision on Death Valley near the Leon River bridge 9.7 miles east of Comanche. Four others were injured including a De Leon mother and her two daughters. Phifer had prior injuries from a welding accident. Funeral services were held January 11 in Comanche with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. He was born May 24, 1923 and survived by a son and two daughters.
The Comanche National Bank held its annual stockholders meeting in the directors room on Tuesday evening January 12. President J W Moore reported 1970 as the best year in bank history with assets over ten million and deposits over nine million. Directors elected include Howell E Cobb Walter Jack Gore Dr J C Terrell WL Nix C H Maguire Jr Loel Dene Cox R K Waggoner O W Greene and J W Moore T J Williams was named honorary Chairman Emeritus. New officers elected include Dr J C Terrell Chairman W L Nix Chairman of the Executive Committee J W Moore President R K Waggoner Senior Vice President and Jerry Vines Vice President Agricultural Representative.
The American Cancer Society will hold a one day Crusade training meeting in San Angelo on Friday Jan 22 for volunteers from 32 counties in District IV. Registration begins at 8:45 a.m. and the opening session at 9:15 a.m. Comanche County is in District IV.
Elmer Hoyt Ellington a 72 year old watch repairman was found dead in the front yard of his home at 401 North Pine. Investigating officers and three City Sanitary trucks workers reported possible night time fall with minor head lacerations and death attributed to natural causes. Services were held January 9 at Comanche Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. T. W. Chapman. Interment followed at Boggy Cemetery in Bosque County. He was born October 1, 1898 in Bosque County and survived by a sister and two brothers.
The Comanche County Fair Association met January 11 at the Jaycee Clubhouse to elect officers and plan the county fair. Barbara Williams was named chairwoman, Richard Lane vice chair, Frances Fritts secretary, and Stelvin Johnston treasurer for the 1971 fair set for August 19 at the new Comanche County Livestock Center. Thirty groups were represented with 43 attendees. upcoming committees include Publicity and Entertainment. next meeting February 8.

The 1969 precinct 4 vote passed 128 to 117 for off premise sales, despite challenges by Roberts Croft and Gray alleging ineligible voters.
Comanche Junior High basketballers travel to Blanket for the annual tournament. Coach Leta Andrews' undefeated Junior Maidens and James Wilson's Paps are favored to win. The girls begin Thursday at 5 p.m. against Santa Anna to open play.
The Texas Automobile Dealers Association asks for 1971 convertibles for the inaugural parade on January 19. DPS personnel will drive the cars for dignitaries including Jeanne C. Riley in Governor’s party Buck Owens Kay Price and others. James R. Arthur and Arthur Chevrolet & Olds Inc of Comanche will provide one convertible and attend the inaugural ball. Arthur Chevrolet & Olds has been a TADA member about twenty five years.
Non boys also play Santa Anna at p.m. Thursday. If they win both games, the teams will play again at 11 and 12 Saturday morning, with finals Saturday night. Other teams entered in the tournament are Sidney Early Glanket Bangs Santa Anna Talpa and May.
Basketball action at the local gym features the Wodians and Maidens hosting Cisco Friday night with the Maidens starting at 7 p.m. Junior High Paps and Maidens host De Leon Monday January 18 with 8th grade girls at 6 p.m. and boys at 7 p.m. Tuesday Clyde visits Comanche to begin the second half of district play.
