Conservative figures show Comanche County farmers earned about two million dollars from cotton and peanuts in 1928. The cotton crop, plus peanut sales, produced roughly equal receipts, equating to about 100 per capita for a 20 000 population.
Resident engineer J. G. Irby reports Highway No. 10 from Comanches to the Brown County line is about one third complete. Forty men and 14 teams are at work with roughly half on bridges and culverts and the rest on grading. A key task is a concrete bridge across Indian Creek with all piers poured. Feed All kinds of chicken feeds at Norrid and Prater.
Gordon Barrett pastor of the First Baptist Church of Odessa was tendered the pastorate of the First Baptist Church of Comanche at a conference Sunday morning. A former seven year pastor of Dublin he is noted as a leading minister in the area and a Baylor University graduate. Barrett has accepted the call.
J Horace Shelton of District No 12 Texas Interscholastic League announced the annual district basketball meet will be held in Brownwood February 15 and 16. The cage play opens Friday at 1 pm and concludes with the championship Saturday night. Counties included are Coleman McCulloch San Saba Menard Mills Comanche Hamilton and Brown. San Saba High School last year captured the district title and bi district crown. Carlton of Hamilton won the district title in 1927. All games are at the Howard Payne gymnasium.
The Co ranche County Commissioners' Court in session Tuesday recommended definite valuations for farm animals. Ordinary stock and dairy cattle are set at 25 dollars per head, yearlings 15 dollars, sheep 5 dollars, and goats 2.5 dollars.
Homer C. DeWolfe of Comanche and Mill Counties receives committee placements in the state legislature on Conservation and Reclamation Engrossed Bills Judiciary Revenue and Taxation. The appointments place him on five panels reflecting broad duties in shaping laws and fiscal policy.
A fire on Friday morning damaged the Hicks Corner School Building, confined to the roof, with an estimated loss of about $100. Miss Ara Huskey, the teacher, discovered the blaze during recess and nearby Cotton Belt Railway workers assisted firefighters. School dismissed for the day.
An abandoned Chrysler 80 sedan found in Comanche near the reservoir by City Marshal W. A. Pate is identified as stolen from Breckenridge. Pate’s Ford coupe stolen from his Comanche residence was found abandoned in Stephenville. Pate suspects the same party.
Manager G P Tate brings Cecil B De Mille's The King of Kings to the Majestic for three days Feb 6 7 8 following successful runs in New York Chicago Philadelphia Boston and beyond. The film features Jeanie Macpherson story and a cast including Warner Logan Schildkraut Varconi Boyd Love Siegmann Faye Edeson De Grasse and others with approximately 2 500 000 spent on production and sets praised by critics and audiences worldwide.
Herbert Butler purchased Vas Preston's cafe on the northwest square corner. He takes charge this week and will run Butler's Cafe. Butler has 12 years of cafe experience in Comanche. Bill Davis and Earl Rogers stay on with the new owner.
The Comanche Chamber of Commerce selected officers for 1929 with J. R. Eanes as President T. J. Williams as Vice President William Chilton as Treasurer and W. H. Carpenter as Secretary after R A Luker resigned and moved to Proctor The board includes T J Williams E E Anthony William C Chilton N N Durham and W T House The group will keep an unpaid secretary and use dues to boost city interests focusing on highways roads and local shows including turkey dairy and a sheep and goat show.
Six business houses were entered Wednesday night at Blanket and mercantile district. Cash and goods were taken from Levisay and Mc Culley and from the Macon Richmond drug store. A safe was broken at the Richmond drug store yielding about 30 dollars and merchandise. The Ernest Allen drug store lost about eight dollars and some cigarettes. Gasoline and oil were stolen from two filling stations. No clues yet. The Richmond drug store yielded watches, a suit, Jamaica ginger, and thousands of cigarettes.
Doyle Perkins, formerly with Garner-Alvis Co. in Comanche, has been moved to the Georgetown store where he previously worked. He and his family left for Georgetown on Monday.
Mrs. Rosetta Kidwell Edwards died of influenza at 10 am Tuesday in Comanche. Hours later her husband John B. Edwards died around midnight the same day. The couple had been ill during Christmas week while visiting their daughter Mrs. Jodie Smith. Funeral services were led by Rev. S. D. Lindsey. The Edwards are survived by six children: J R Edwards of Rule, R O Edwards, J T Edwards, Mrs. Jodie Smith, Mrs. Roy Raines, Mrs. Jake Phifer and W A Edwards.
The International Layine Contests close with John Tarieton finishing fifth overall and averaging 212.46 eggs among 560 hens. Geo B Koiler of Port Angeles Washington entered a White Leghorn pen that set a double world record by producing 3009 eggs in trap nests, with six hens noted as egg getters.
Comanche will host its first exclusive Sheep and Goat Show on Monday April 1. The event, announced by the Chamber of Commerce, aims to attract entries from Comanche County and ranches across Central and West Texas including San Angelo. Interest in sheep and goats has surged, with county numbers up 500 percent in recent years and stockmen showing strong enthusiasm for the new show.
The Piggly Wirrly of Comanche assigned Friday with W. F. Kemp of Brownwood named trustee to oversee affairs. Kemp will temporarily manage the store and has prior business experience in Mullin.
Sheriff J T Gilbreath returned Priday from Quitman with Bill Webb who was jailed on forgery charges. Webb’s bond was set at 1000 dollars and not posted by Saturday. He was indicted by the last Grand Jury. Webb allegedly passed a 14 dollar check to Sinler and Lacy under an assumed name while working near Comanche.
The Gustine dairy school began Tuesday evening under Supt O B Rose with the largest attendance ever seen for a Central West Texas session. Prof Smith of John Tarleton College led the first class, outlining twelve reasons dairying is advantageous, from steady income to bank credit and family employment.
