Social Security Deadline January 31 For Farmers

Farmers have until January 31 to file reports on Social Security taxes withheld. Ellis Campbell Jr., District Director of Internal Revenue for Northern Texas, says use Form 913 for Employer's Annual Tax Return for Agricultural Employees. Any farmer paying cash wages of 159 dollars or more must withhold Social Security taxes. Tax must also be withheld on wages under 150 dollars for workers employed 20 days or more per year. A farm employee includes anyone who furnishes and pays workers to perform agricultural labor.

Farmers urged to issue W-2 for workers over six hundred

Mr Campbell explains that a crew leader is an employer under the definition. The 1968 tax rate is eighty eight percent of the first seven thousand eight hundred dollars of taxable wages paid a farm employee. Half the tax is paid by the farmer and half by the employee. Farmers should issue a W-2 wage and tax statement to every worker paid six hundred dollars or more annually. Those paid less than six hundred receive a statement covering Social Security taxes. More details appear in IRS Publication 51. Send a postcard to Supply IRS Dallas for a free copy.
