Comanche Man Dies in Java Sea Ship Collision

Jean Willtrout 27 of Comanche Texas is listed among 27 souls lost when the Northern Dancer ferry and the Aqueduct collision sank off Jakarta. His body returned to Comanche and will be buried Jan. 31 at the Willtrout Cemetery after services. Survivors say the vessels were transferring materials when the accident occurred 30 miles from Jakarta.

De Leon Soldier Awarded Bronze Star in Vietnam

Larry D. Hight 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Hight of De Leon, received the Bronze Star while serving as an infantryman with Company C 1st Battalion 6th Infantry 198th Light Infantry Brigade near Chu Lai. He entered the Army in 1969 and has a commendation medal and the Combat Infantryman Medal.

Comanche County Sees 2100 Voter Registrations

A total of 2100 Comanche Countians have received voter registration certificates to date. The Assessor-Collector, Mrs Louise Evans, noted 30 under 21 year olds may vote in Federal elections per a Supreme Court ruling. Registration is expected to rise as the deadline nears with Mrs Evans visiting county points to facilitate signups.

Basketball Play Here Monday and Tuesday

Local CHS gym hosts basketball next week starting Monday January 4 with four games. Comanche Junior High teams, including 7th and 8th grade squads, face Hamilton and Bullpups with 7th grade girls at 5:00 PM. Tuesday Ballinger visits for two games as Indians and Bearcats, Maidens idle, opening with B-teams then District 8-AA clash.

Train Car Crash Fatal to Woman at Crossing

A 25 year old Comanche woman Miss Jimmie Ree Norwood died in a 1:00 pm crash at the St Houston Santa Fe crossing. Her 1964 Chevrolet collided with the first engine unit of an east bound freight train led by engineer Frank Welch. The death occurred near Durham Pecan Company. body at Comanche Funeral Home. Survived by her mother Una Norwood and twin sister Bobby, both of Comanche.

Frances Lockwood reports the Comanche Chamber of Commerce home decoration contest drew crowds as residents viewed festive displays after dark. First prize went to Mrs. Bertha Hollingshead for a manger scene at 1101 North Lane with second awarded to Virgil Norris at 1009 West Highland for bright lighting and third to Archie Poyd at 900 North Elm for artistry and handscaping.
