Local merchants report grand openings and sales events at 132 West Central and nearby shops. Advertised items include Frigidaire appliances at 199.95, Speed Queen washers with $50 trade in, Bulova watches and 25 percent off, plus shoe and jewelry discounts. Football event and April election details noted.
Joe W. Harper superintendent of Comanche Public Schools travels to Atlanticity New Jersey for a National Conference of School Administrators. About 800 Texas superintendents and 5 000 to 6 000 educators nationwide participate in a three day event with a focus on a White House education conference.
Comanche reports the United Fund Drive surpassed its $5,600 goal with cash and pledges totaling six thousand seven hundred seventy two dollars and fifty seven cents. January cash of six hundred thirty one dollars and fifty cents was raised, with strong committee cooperation praised by General Chairman Herb Goodson.
Comanche High School and De Leon meet in the 8-AA opener at Hamilton with girls game at 4 30 Thursday and boys at 6 30 and 8 10. Indians swept round robin and lead Granbury and Hamilton. playoff for district crown follows next week. Hamilton Granbury Dublin games precede finals broadcast on KCLW.
A Brownwood man was arrested Thursday night in De Leon by city officer Dale Shoemaker. Authorities seized 168 pints whiskey 12 cans beer and a pint of vodka. He pled guilty in County Court and was fined $200 plus court costs.
Ticket sales for the Comanche High School football banquet are brisk with about 400 attendees expected. Arlington State College coach Claude Gilstrap will speak and bring players Calvin Lee and Dalton Hicks. The event honors CHS football teams and features a Junior Rose Bowl film.
About 400 delegates are expected for the District Eastern Star school of Instruction District 3 Section 5 in the city. The event runs 9 am to 4 pm at Masonic Hall with a 6:30 pm banquet at Me’s Cafeteria. State officers include Worthy Grand Matron Mrs Pauline Smith and Grand Worthy Patron Ed Sharp of Dallas. Brownwood’s Bertha Clarke leads the local lodge. Local officials urge attendance.
Friedrichs Tot Center at 132 W Central opens Saturday offering infant wear for boys and girls up to six years. Owner Fred W Schrader, former Link Aviation field engineer and ex General Electric worker, invites area residents to visit. Lt and Mrs Joseph Slider announce birth of daughter Elanor Louise on February 7 at Craig Air Force Base. Grandparents are Hardy and Mrs Slider of Comanche.
Singers of the area and visitors are invited to attend a special singing meeting at Democrat Friday night February 15.
A Tuesday February 19 event features Sidney outside men versus Sidney High School girls, and Sidney School Faculty versus the boys team. Proceeds fund award jackets for the Sidney High basketball girls. Proceeds support equipment and community fun for all attendees.
Joy Lee Williams purchases Sartor Drive-In Cleaners from Mrs. Edwin Sartor and M. L. Green and takes charge Friday February 15 under the name Williams Drive-In Cleaner. The shop sits between the Majestic theatre and Hendersons with staff from the former firm continuing, including Mrs. Sartor and Mr. Green, while Mrs. Westmoreland oversees alterations.
Mrs. R. B. Cross wife of District Judge Ciciss of Gatesville died Tuesday morning in a Galveston hospital after an illness.
