Nabors Named to Key Committees in 61st Legislature

Lynn Nabors state representative for the 64th district covering Comane Brown Coleman and Boones counties was named to State Affairs Insurance Conservation and Reclamation Commerce and Manufacturing and Criminal Jurisprudence. After a three day weekend members will begin work on their assignments. Nabors has received over 750 letters from constituents mostly about the Governors Education Report.

The Comenche Jaycees announce a national style shooting education program co sponsored by Daisy Manufacturing Co for boys and girls ages 7 to 14. It covers safe gun handling and responsibility in a 13 week BB gun course with a preview for families on Thursday February 20 at 7 30 p m in the Junior High School gymnasium.

Open House Slated Sunday at New School Buildings

The Comanche School Board invites all area citizens to tour the new Band Hall and the new Elementary school building Sunday afternoon February 16 from 2:00 to 4:00. The Band Hall is in use and the Elementary building will start next week. Teachers and School Board members will be on duty to guide visitors.

Death of Waco Sergeant Basquette after Comanche Bank raid

Death came Tuesday night at 1 o clock in a Waco hospital to claim Sergeant Donald H. Basquette 31 victim of pistol bullets fired into his body early Sunday morning December 22 by Jerry Dean Cloud 24 year old Comanchean Cloud was killed after grabbing Basquettes revolver and opening fire in the patrol car Two other officers were wounded Cloud was linked to the Comanche National Bank holdup and the tavern shooting in Waco FBI and local police recovered more than 7000 in cash from a motel room near Killeen Funeral services for Basquette were held at St Albans Episcopal Church Waco with burial in Oakwood Cemetery.

Barnes predicts defeat of compulsory school consolidation

Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes of Austin said the Governor's Committee on Public School Education offered constructive recommendations but that compulsory consolidation will likely not pass in the Texas Senate this year. He noted districts under 2,600 students and other proposals may be ignored, while voluntary incentives may be pursued. Senate Bill 2 by Schwartz of Galveston and Mauzy of Dallas contains these recommendations and was referred to the Senate Education Committee.

Comanche School census tallies 1224 pupils for 1969 70

The Comanche School census lists 1224 pupils aged six to seventeen for 1969 70 with 106 new first graders. The district ends the fourth six weeks on Friday February 14. A basketball finale hosts Indians and Maidens vs Eastland Mavericks. A March Friday holiday notes teachers’ convention in Brownwood. Trustee filing closes midnight Wednesday March 5.

Proclamation Urges Heart Fund Support By City Officials

Comanche Mayor Gyale C. Pirkle signed a proclamation at a Heart Fund Campaign gathering urging citizens to support the Heart Fund with gifts and voluntary service. The document notes heart and blood vessel diseases cause more deaths than all other causes combined and designates February as Heart Month in the city.

Les Strawn and Eldon Ray Tupin filed for two trustee positions on the Comanche Independent School Board. Both incumbents Clyde Williams and Sid Carney are not seeking reelection. Filing deadline is midnight March 5. Strawn recently left the highway patrol and works at Comanche Trailer Corp. Tupin is married, a Chevrolet dealer manager, a Comanche High School graduate with two children.
