Texas Selective Service Sets February 16 Registration Rules

General J Watt Page Texas Selective Service Director announced February 16 registration to complete the nation list of potential manpower. All unregistered males born between February 17 1897 and December 1 1921 must register at home between 7 am and 9 pm. Those age 21 to 36 who registered in 1940 41 are exempt. If away from home register at the nearest place but use home address to be included with local board quotas.

Indian Cagers Lead Dublin to Title Playoff

The Comanche Indians beat the Dublin Lions 33 to 15 at the Comanche Gym in game one of a three game series for District 12 A titles. Coker and Eoff led with ten points each, Hall added seven, Swann four, and Nichols one. The Indians aim for a second straight title by winning another game in Dublin next.

Instruction School Today For Helpers With Registration

An instruction school for military registration helpers will be held this afternoon at the Local Draft Board Office in the courthouse. Superintendent W. Z. Compton leads the program with chairmen named for Comanche, De Leon, Gustine, Proctor, Sidney, Sipe Springs, Mercer Gap, Newbury, and Lamkin registering places.

New Terracing Plan Approved in Comanche County

The Comanche County AAA approves a terracing program with a basic price of 75 cents per 100 linear feet for easier farms. Harder farms may exceed this up to 1.00 per 100 feet with county or state approval. County Commissioners endorse the plan and urge farmers to contact the AAA office for eligibility and approved contractors.

The Caraway and Sons Shorthorn herd from Comyn captured ten first prizes at the Houston Fat Stock Show and Livestock Exposition, with multiple class wins including Golden Oak Archer and Dun ridge Lavender. The event ran February 6 to 15 with strong attendance and a record entry rise, and Gene Autry headlined the rodeo.

Dr. Bryant Baker Leaves Comanche for Dallas Clinic

Dr. Bryant O. Baker, long a partner in the Comanche Clinic founded about two years ago by Dr. Dewitt Claunch, will depart Saturday for Dallas to open a new clinic with his brother. Claunch left for Army duty about a year ago, and Baker says he is leaving with regret but seeks a larger opportunity in Dallas.

Cravens to Hold Dairy Sale Tuesday

H. L. Cravens stages an auction at his ranch near Winchell on Tuesday February 17 offering a dairy herd of registered and grade Jersey and Holstein cows calves of all ages and complete new dairy equipment. The Cravens herd is well known in Texas and has won numerous prizes at dairy shows.

Red Cross Near War Relief Fund Goal

The Comanche County Red Cross Chapter is within 100 of its 2400 War Relief Fund. Donations can be left at the Chief Office with County Chairman Miss Berta Goodson or with Roll Call Chairman C. L. Huett. This week donations of at least one dollar have been recorded.

Former Comanchean Is Promoted To Lt Colonel In Army

Curtis Renfro nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Callaway and a Comanche High School 1919 graduate has been promoted from major to lieutenant colonel in the U S Army. He is stationed at Fort Benning Georgia for about a month before transferring to the Army Camp at Alexandria. He attended A and M College and graduated from West Point.

Goodson Couple Announce Birth of Son David Herbert

Lt and Mrs Herbert Goodson of Mineral Wells announce the birth of a son at a Mineral Wells hospital Monday. The infant weighed five and a half pounds and was named David Herbert. He is the grandson of Mrs H N Goodson and Mr and Mrs Hardie Jones of Comanche.

Income Tax Help Day At Comanche Post Office

A Federal income tax expert from the Collector of Internal Revenue Office will assist taxpayers in preparing returns at the Comanche Post Office on March 4. No charge. For calendar year 1941 returns, file by March 15, 1942 with the Dallas Collector. Penalties include up to 10000 dollars or one year imprisonment plus 5 to 25 percent of tax for willful failure.

Poll Tax Payments in Comanche County Total 3624

Comanche County voters number about 5000 with poll tax receipts totaling 3624 this year. Assessor-Collector P A Pettit attributes the slight decline from 3747 in 1940 to wartime service as men join the armed forces. Property tax collections are not yet complete but estimated near 90 percent.

WPA records show about 243665.59 spent on public improvement projects in Comanche County during 1941 led by WPA District Manager W H Beazley. Local sponsors contributed around 155959.25. Projects cover Adult Education Library Health and School Lunch programs with five men and 29 women employed locally. Construction includes school buildings and road work with 109 men on similar projects.

Moring Re elected to Lead Proctor School

Superintendent Perry Moring and Mrs Mée ring were re elected to another year at Proctor School. Four years of service have seen steady progress including a new gymnasium completed last year serving high school students. The faculty and pupils added 11 affiliated units last year under Supt Moring and aim for more this year.

Chief To Go To Press Earlier On Every Thursday

On account of War Time the Chief will go to press an hour earlier on Thursdays so papers can be placed on night trains arriving earlier. Merchants should submit ads and news items sooner and all Want Ads must be in by six o clock Thursday.

County Meet for This Year Discontinued by Comanche League

The Comanche County Interscholastic League executive committee met February 6 and voted to discontinue league work for the current scholastic year. Nearby counties and most state counties are taking the same step to conserve funds for school buses and other safety needs. County Superintendent Dale Howard notes that the state is ending most vocational agriculture contests for the duration.

Comanche Youth In RAF Squadron That Downs Nazi Bomber

Jim Bob Lee of Comanche son of Mr and Mrs Allan Lee served in an American Eagle Squadron that downed a German bomber over England. The letter to A S Morse Comanche from Lee was read and passed by the British censor. He has been a fighter pilot for about a month.
