The speaker recalls childhood playmates and companions now gone or distant. He laments vanished loves and friends who have died or left him, wandering through memories of his youthful days and the familiar faces that no longer remain.
At the February 9 1931 City Council meeting Mayor J R Eanes was asked to petition the Southwest Gas Company for lower rates for Comanche Texas. The move follows neighboring towns De Leon Dublin and Stephenville seeking rate reductions and a Railway Commission hearing planned in Austin with Comanche representation.
A Texan on a thousand pound Mexican bull named Jerry rode from Brownsville to the Brooklyn Bridge to meet Mayor Walker. The Mayor was ill so the welcome did not happen. The rider offered a horned trophy and advertised employability by displaying a sign on his overcoat. Harlem’s Lafayette tree draws job seekers and theater moguls alike as a superstition for finding work.
Stephenville council adopted resolutions urging Brame City Telephone, Texas Power and Light, and Southwest Gas to cut charges. City secretary written letters request $2.50 monthly for business phone service, $1.50 for residential, 1 minimum electricity charge, 5 cents per kilowatt hour above minimum, and 40 cents per thousand cubic feet of gas. A Dublin mass meeting drew about 200 protesters over gas quality and utility prices. similar meetings noted in Comanche and DeLeon.
County Superintendent R S Walker says deferred tax payments will not materially affect schools. Some terms may shorten by a few weeks while teachers finish their terms after cash runs out. Vouchers signed by trustees will be approved when funds are available, possibly delaying final month salaries to October or November. Tax collections are about 17 percent below last year per tax collector Mrs B R Speed.
State tax collections through February 1 totaled 56006.27 in Comanche county, down from 70706.04 a year earlier. County collections reached 98141.69 versus 48845.84 last year, while common school taxes were 50838 compared with 61552.
Hill Huddleston authorizes the Chief to announce his candidacy for City Secretary of the City of Co Manche. He says he has farm roots near Sidney Texas, a long residence in the community, and urges voters to elect him to faithfully serve the city.
C M Moore announces candidacy for another term in April city election. The city combines Treasurer Water Collector with City Secretary in April and Moore expresses readiness to fill both roles efficiently. He invites public inspection of his past work and pledges best effort if elected.
A bill by Homer C. DeWolfe from Monmouth and Mills counties aims to make the partial tax payment plan permanent. It allows paying half of the due amount at any time and shifts the ten percent penalty from February 1 to October 1, with the regulatory penalty becoming effective in October. DeWolfe says the measure answers demand for semi annual tax payments.
W A Pate announces his candidacy for city marshal. He states he has served faithfully and efficiently while in office and pledges to continue efforts if reelected. He requests the public's support.
Thirty five blocks of streets have been graded using 2227 yards of material in ten days. The city and property owners share costs equally with $1200 spent on the relief and improvement effort. S. S. Payne heads the street work program.
An abandoned Chevrolet sedan was found by City Marshall W. A. Pate in East Comanche early Saturday morning and was later identified as belonging to Lee Allman of Brownwood. Allman recovered his property Sunday and said the car was stolen from a Brownwood business street late Friday night.
The first round of the County Interscholastic League Debating tournament for boys and girls will be held at DeLeon Pricay March 12, with the second round in Comanche Friday March 20. S. B. Culpepper of Comyn, Director, announces the schedule and related notices.
Miss Edith Currier of Stephenville, formerly of Comanche, serves as Secretary to State Senator Carl C. Hardin during the legislative session, per the Stephenville Tribune.
Four seven are included in first group of loans under the Federal Drought Relief act presented to the county committee. Loans total 721.50 with regulations set by the Federal government and local committees assisting applicants. Local committees in Comanche County are listed with members, and eligible farmers must have suffered from drought with acceptable collateral. loans cover feed seed and fertilizer, not groceries.
The Leon River concrete bridge on Highway 10 in Comanche County will be let at the February meeting of the Highway Commission. Plans were completed about a year ago, and the bridge completes an all weather road from Brady to Fort Worth. The project includes a 1 022 ft reinforced concrete structure over the Leon River and additional drainage works in Brown County along highways 7 and 10.
City Council voted to extend City taxes without penalties from February 1 to April 10. City Secretary Cy Moore said no interest or penalty would be charged before April 10. after that a ten percent penalty and per cent interest would apply. The measure covers this year only. A similar extension for Comanche School taxes was approved at the School meeting.
