County Agent Floyd Key suggests coloring fireplace flames with chemical treatments during the holidays. Calcium chloride yields orange, copper chloride blue, potassium chloride purple, strontium nitrate red, lithium chloride carmine, and copper sulfate emerald green, using dry pine cones or wood soaked in a gallon of solution. Logs made from rolled newspapers can also burn rainbow colored after soaking in copper sulfate and rock salt, then drying for several days.
