Christmas festivities fill Comanche town with gifts and shows

In Comanche the holiday pageant drew large crowds for a Christmas event featuring Santa, a theater show, and a 900 BAND performance. Prizes of 25 dollars were awarded, with winners named from Ruth Comanche McGlothlin and others. Pettit Aims for County Show Calves

Jack Pettit son of Mr and Mrs Cliff Pettit and former Comanche FFA president demonstrates calf fitting for the Comanche County Livestock Show set for January 22. He showcases two calves a Hereford raised by Pettit and an Angus he bought to feed. Pettit plans to enter them in the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show later in January.

Fifty Voice Choir Presents Handel's Messiah at Local Methodist

A 50 voice choir directed by Thos H Greer performs Handel's Messiah at First Methodist Church Friday Dec 16 at 7 30 PM. Soloists include Sylvia Shelton Beth Lynn Jack Chamblis and Bill Lightfoot with Howard Payne Cisco Junior College and University of Texas students joining the choir. The program covers birth and parts of crucifixion and resurrection with Hallelujah Chorus, inviting the public and offering nursery care.

Garden Club Pilgrimage Set For Tonight

The Comanche Garden Club hosts a Christmas Pilgrimage tonight from 6 to 9 pm with 50 and 25 cent admission. Six From CHS Named to All Regional Band

Comanche High School band members earned six places in the All Regional Band at the Regional 2 tryouts held at McMurry College Abilene. About 30 to 35 bands competed as Thurston Atwood led the CHS group with Patsy Atwood Becky Baxter Anita Edmondson Sue McGlothlin Stanton W and Betty Grace Durham among the selections for the 90 piece ensemble.

Cage Tourney At De Leon

Comanche and other teams compete in the De Leon Invitational with De Leon Gorman Stephen ville Dublin Bangs Cisco and Fastland. Stephenville Honey Bees favored to win but face strong De Leon and German squads. In opening round Comanche defeated German 58 37 while CHS girls fell 28 49. Play runs Wednesday through Saturday with consolation brackets for both genders.

Irrigation Increases Peanut Yields At County Meeting

Farmers from Comanche Eastland Erath Brown and McCulloch counties gathered at the Comanche County Courthouse for an irrigation meeting. W J Parks of the local Electric Cooperative opened with remarks on irrigation possibilities. Panel shares show peanut yields around 50 to 75 bushels per acre with irrigation, often doubling dryland outputs. One producer cited $100 more per acre in year three, while others highlighted alfalfa pecans and sweet potatoes as irrigated crops. Storage reservoirs and 50 to 60 gpm wells supported irrigated acreage. Overall, irrigation paid off and interest remains high for future expansion.

Ace Harper Elected As School Superintendent

Joe Harper a 35 year old Cranfills Gap resident was chosen by the Comanche School Board from a field of 50 applicants to serve as superintendent for a two year term plus unexpired 1955 56 duties. He will split duties between Comanche and Cranfills Gap and assume full time in January. Harper is a University of Texas and SWSTC graduate with a master’s degree, is married to Jayne Hamilton, a music teacher, and is a Navy veteran. He previously led Brock Schools in Parker County and has strong local church ties.

Chis Boys Triumph At Stephenville In Tight Thriller

Dale Fisher scored two late free throws to seal a 44 42 victory for the Indians over the Jackets at Stephenville as coach Mike Murphy’s team edged the Jackets in a high scoring finish. The opener saw the Indian Maidens fall 39 22 to Stephenville Honey Bees with Pie Coach leading scoring at 17 points and Fisher adding 15.
