Jury List Delayed as Prospects Short for Trial

County Court docket call failed to muster enough qualified prospective jurors and was dropped. Judge Johnny Livingston expects a new jury panel soon and plans to set trials for contested cases. November counts show 328 criminal cases, 11 disposed, 319 remaining. DWI leads with 92 cases at month start, 8 added, 3 disposed.

Christmas Band Concert Set For Monday Night

Comanche High School bands from eighth grade seventh grade beginners and the high school will present their annual Christmas concert Monday night December 19 at 7 30 p m in the high school auditorium. Leroy Anderson Sleigh Ride and Variations on We Three Kings highlight the program. Admission is 1 50 for adults and 1 for students.

Burglars Strike Comanche Area Burghlar Loot Reaches Thousands

Sheriff records show a spate of burglaries around Comanche in recent days with losses totaling several thousand dollars. Miss Dylan M Sneed reported home intrusions at Hasse between Sunday 5:30 PM and Monday 10:00 AM missing three antique dressers and an old kitchen safe. Higginbothams at Gustine reported burglaries between Saturday 5:00 PM and Monday 8:00 AM, including a chain saw rope and about 30 pocket knives. Clark's John Deere Tractor Co outside Comanche city limits was hit between Friday 8:30 PM and Saturday 8:00 AM, with shop tools riding lawnmower high pressure washer and other gear valued around 1500 stolen. Gustine Schools alter holiday calendar with classes through Thursday December 22 and early dismissal at 2 30 PM. Classes resume Tuesday January 3.

Court of Criminal Appeals overturns Richard D. Smith's death sentence for the April 15 1976 burglary and knife slaying of Travis R Durham a Comanche pharmacist. The ruling cites juror bias and the need for consideration of the full range of punishment. The case now returns toward retrial in the 220th District Court with potential venue changes.

Countians Use More Prescription Drugs

Comanche County residents are using more prescribed medicines, with the regional annual outlay reaching 29.90 per person, up from 17.50 in 1966. The HEW data show higher totals nationwide and in the area, with out-of-pocket costs dominating and age and gender affecting spending.

Santa Letters and Essays Contest at The Comanche Chief

Friday is the deadline for letters to Santa and two Christmas essay contests. Entries must be at The Comanche Chief office by 5 p.m. for publication in the December 22 Christmas issue. Eighteen plus submit essays on A Christmas I Remember. under eighteen write What Christmas Means To Me. Prizes are 10 and 5 dollars. Essays limited to 150 words.
