Canvass to raise $30,000 for Comanche County memorial center

Campaign opens to fund an American Legion Memorial Community Center honoring World Wars I and II veterans. Over $7,000 raised already with donors including Higginbotham firms and the Higginbotham Burial Association, plus a $1,000 Series F War Bond from the Comanche Chamber of Commerce. Committees plan house-to-house solicitations today to reach at least half the goal, with funds placed in escrow for the center and related sponsorships.

Tokyo Raid Casualty Report for Cpl Truman Vines

Cpl Truman Vines of Comanche landed in Saipan three weeks earlier and participated in the third raid over Tokyo on November 30. A gunner on a B 29 Super Fortress he is the son of Mr and Mrs E C Vines and a former Comanche High School basketball star. His training was at Kingman Army Air Field and Smoky Hill Army Air Base. His wife Missie Guthrie resides at 3127 Emmett Street Cal.

Peggy Edmondson Killed Here In Car Accident Sunday

Peggy Joyce Edmondson a 15 year old Comanche High School queen died in a late Sunday automobile crash on the 36th Division Memorial State Highway near the west city limits. The car she rode in overturned after a collision with another vehicle. Patty Jo McDonald and Harold Gene McGlothlin were injured, Brent Rauhut and Joe Alexander uninjured. Funeral services were held Monday at the First Baptist Church with interment in Oakwood Cemetery.

Lt Wyatt Morris in Philippines with 7th Infantry Division

Lt. Wyatt Lee Morris, in the Philippine Islands with the 7th Infantry Division, reports from Leyte Island. He notes warm weather, frequent rain, sleeping in water, bananas and coconuts, locals perceived as not progressive, and censorship limits on news reaching the front.

Pvt Allan Beck of Comanche has been slightly wounded by shrapnel in Germany. He was evacuated to a French Army hospital after the injury to his neck and reports through his wife Jewel Kirkland that he is progressing, with the shrapnel removal completed.

Comanche Soldier Floyd D. Coker Wounded in Germany

Staff Sergeant Floyd D. Coker husband of Irene Warren of Comanche was slightly wounded in Germany on November 23. He was hit in the leg by shrapnel, shattered the bone, and was treated first in Holland before evacuation to France. Coker, a 1938 Comanche High School graduate and former athlete, enlisted in 1942 after working at A P Tea Co. He has a two year old son, James Ronald, and a brother Jim Coker serves in the U S Coast Guard.

Wounded Soldier Wilburn L Wilson Counted Wounded Again

Pfc Wilburn L Wilson of Co Manche was wounded in action in France on November 17 following an August injury that sent him to an Army hospital in England. War Department telegram states he was slightly injured and that further condition reports would follow.

Carlile Wounded In Germany Action

Pfc. Ernest E. Carlile of Sidney was wounded in Germany and sent to a United States Base Hospital in France. He suffered a knee injury while serving with the Fueineers of the First Army. His brother Tech-Set. Jake Carlile is also in Germany, while another brother Staff Sergeant Virgil V. Carlile was killed at St Lo. The couple also received the Purple Heart posthumously for Virgil.

Former Teacher And Missionary Dies Rites Here

Miss Agnes Graham a Comanche Ward School teacher who resigned for illness died in El Paso. Funeral planned at First Methodist Church in Comanche. She taught here for years and served 18 years as a missionary to Korea. A zealous Methodist worker known across Southern Methodism. She returned from Korea about a decade ago due to her mother's illness and resumed teaching.

Baby Found Dead In Bed In Comanche

Three month old Eugene Forrester Jr. was found dead in his crib in Comanche after a night with his mother. Funeral services were held at the Comanche Funeral Home with Rev. Gregory officiating, interment in Oakwood Cemetery. Survived by parents and a 16 month old sister Yvonne, grandfathers Lewis Forrester and Rob Steele, and aunt Mrs. Mattie Sanford. The baby had been healthy until a week before.

Pvt Melton Stevens Wounded in Action in Tarsland

Pvt Melton E Stevens of the 110th Airborne Division was seriously wounded in action in Tarsland on October 5, reported to his father A O Stevens Rt 1 Comanche. His unit earned the Distinguished Unit Badge for Normandy invasion work. On D Day he described a vivid scene from a glider and noted excitement around him. His brother Albert C Stevens, a pharmacist’s mate, has returned from Alaska and is stationed in Virginia.
