J A Barton reports 4-H club results with acre plots yielding profits per acre and examples from Amond Carleton Eldon Starks Foley and John. Carleton mined 262 gallons of black seed melon juice at a cost and profit details. Starks earned profit from melons. Foley compared with father’s lower yield. John describes planting and cultivation methods and sold 580 melons for a profit of 28.05.
Burnell Norwood aged 17, son of T A Norwood, was treated by a local physician and later admitted to Brownwood Hospital after a runaway car knocked him down and dragged him across the street in front of the Frank Phifer Service Station. The incident occurred while Logary Williams was cranking another car and the Williams car rolled in gear, striking Norwood before an obstruction halted it.
George B. Black former county commissioner and postmaster has been appointed to the Texas Centennial Commission. He will oversee the Indian and Ex Ranger Department at the Exposition and travel to Oklahoma to hire thirty Indians for a six month placement. They will live in wigwams on the fair grounds and wear native costumes. Black will also coordinate the Texas Ex-Rangers Association exhibit at the World’s Fair.
Harry Wyly has leased the Ideal Meat Market and took charge Thursday. There is no change in the management of the Ideal Food Store Grocery Department. Toth Departments will remain in their present location.
The Extension Department of A. and M. College outlines major 1936 AAA cotton contract changes. Four year coverage, base acreage reduced from 45.5 to 44.5 million acres, 30 to 45 percent reduced production for 1936, five cent per round or eight dollar sixty per acre benefit, and altered sharing percentages for sharecroppers and tenants. Eligible voters must sign contracts. community committees elected by association members, with 100 percent support urged.
Children urged to write letters to Santa and mail or bring them to The Comanche Chief for publication in the Christmas Greeting Edition on December 23. Letters due by December 20 and must include the writer’s clearly printed name. Santa will appear in person in Comanche Saturday.
A. E. Carlock Paducah editor and former Texas Press Association president spoke to the Comanche Lions Club. He highlighted service clubs and noted Paducah Lions financed 109 pediatric tonsil removals for children whose parents could not afford them.
Mrs D T Long of Comanche died Friday at 5 15 am at her home. Funeral Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev Len Dalton and Rev A E Willson. burial in Shiloh Cemetery. Survived by eleven children W P Long R P Long B R Long C C Montgomery Ruth Ellis D W Long John Burton Mamie Eva Long and others plus two brothers J H Harris J B Harris. Numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren attended.
KE H McCarty seeks re election in Precinct 3 amid a possible four way race. Other contenders include Bud Miller Clements Lukey and F T Brandt with Brandt a previous candidate who was narrowly defeated. Luker is Floyd Luker’s son from Graham Chapel and Miller is a prominent local farmer.
Texas hunters must not shoot across fences into posted ground. Attorney General Harry Pollard ruled that a hunter in one pasture who shoots a deer on posted land and crosses the fence to retrieve it trespasses beyond his rifle’s shooting limit. The opinion suggests modern deer hunters could trespass a mile or more into forbidden territory.
Rev. H. D. Morgan recently called as pastor of the Central Christian Church of Comanche will be in town this weekend from Fort Worth to fill his appointment Sunday at 11 a m and 7 15 p m J R Banes says the public is invited and church members are urged to attend Morgan is a student at Colle g eay.
Comanche High School will stage J. Caesar a burlesque next Thursday at 7 30 p m Principal Smith says members of the Indian football squad will perform in Roman togas and carry ancient Australian war instruments to raise funds for the athletic fund.
Crowds flocked to Higginbotham store for the Winter Merchandise Event and Christmas trade bids advertised by The Comanche Chief. The issue features large ads from The Service Drug Store and The William Restie Drue Company, with farm rental offers following a prior listing in the Wanted column.
Wm C Chilton, president of Comanche National Bank, was appointed District Deputy Grand Master at the Texas Grand Lodge session in Waco. He is a Past Master of the local lodge. W M Weatherred of Coleman was elected Grand Master.
An announcement by Mayor John E. Petts and Burness Rudd indicates a Young Democrats Club may form in Comanche soon. Similar clubs are planned in nearby towns as President Roosevelt prepares to address the State Convention of the Young Democrats in Fort Worth in July.
Brunk Comedians with a 31 member troupe begin a week of canvas performances opposite the jail in Comanche next Monday. Abe Racewell stars in What Every Woman Should Know with a540 Hello Slick billing. Rosewell, on leave from Hal Roach Studios, brings wide show business experience. Brunk Brothers are popular locally.
Ex Mayor M Coleman announces a Jackson Day Banquet in Comanche on January 8 with friends of W Roosevelt slated to hear his radio address. Coleman has appointed a committee to arrange details to be announced later.
