Landowners to vote on new soil district in Comanche

County Agent N. E. Scudder explains a December 14 vote by landowners in northeastern Comanche County on joining parts of Erath and Eastland Counties to form a Soil and Water Conservation District. The plan covers lands drained by the North Leon River and its tributaries with polling at Comanche De Leon Proctor Sidney Beattie and Duster during regular hours.

Thieves Loot Dudley Drug Store for 200 Dollars

The Sutton Dudley Drug Store was burglarized early Thursday last week and about 200 dollars in cash was taken. Thieves pried the front door, forced the safe knob, and escaped with the money. A separate break in at Service Drug Store failed due to an alarm. Sheriff Wid Spivey is leading the investigation with several crews.

Waldo Swindle Killed in Early Morning Crash Near Comanche

A seven mile west of Comanche collision on Highway 10 killed Waldo Swindle 29 a Creamer community farmer en route to Camp Bowie Brownwood. Mor rison Ewing drove a Fort Worth oil truck and survived with minor injuries to others. Swindle survived by wife and three children. funeral held Friday at Indian Gap with Rev. Gordon Barrett officiating.

Dutch Meyer To Speak At Lions Banquet For Comanche

Texas Christian University coach Dutch Meyer will headline the Comanche Lions Club banquet next Thursday honoring the Comanche High School football team. Meyer notes TCU’s Sugar Bowl titles, a national crown, and a Southwest Conference title in five years and plans to share football clips. Charlies Marshall says Meyer will bring motion picture equipment for the squad and Lions members. Eighteen Comanche lettermen for 1940 were named by Coach Glenn Frazier and John Dyer, with seven returning next season. Co captains were Thomas Marshall and Toby Davis.

Basketball Tourney Underway At Hasse High

Hasse High hosts a multi school basketball tournament with ten girls teams and eight boys teams. The event runs through Friday and Saturday with finals expected Saturday night. Participating schools include Beattie Lamkin Proctor Priddy Sidney Fairie Oliver Springs Duster De Leon and Hasse. Lamkin and De Leon enter only girls teams.

Night prowler attacks Comanche High senior

The 18 year old Thelma Ruth Graham was assaulted by a prowler after he tried to enter the Harris home. Cleo Graham heard the disturbance and the sisters summoned help as deputies tracked foot prints near the ball park. Thelma Ruth remains in bed with bruises and shock.

Second Arrest Made In Couch Murder Case

A second man faces indictment in the J. D. Couch death near Gustine. Clifford Brook, 20, was arrested in Claremore and held for Comanche County on murder charges tied to the August 16 slaying. Brook, who previously served time at McAlester, waived extradi tion. Frank Barton, 19, already indicted for murder, remains jailed while awaiting trial.

AAA Committee Election At Boxes Sets Next Friday

Noted explorer Rev. Roy E. Curtis of Brownwood Texas will lecture at Comanche High School Auditorium Tuesday night Dec. 10 at 7 30 under the Junior Class auspices. Curtis aided the Will Rogers Wiley Post Memorial Expedition that erected Barrow Alaska memorial in 1938 and arrives with a Eskimo sledge dog puppy gift from Barrow missionaries.

Arctic Explorer Lecture Promises Insightful Evening

The Comanche High School Junior Class will host Rev. Roy E. Curtis of Brownwood Texas for a Tuesday night lecture at the school auditorium. Curtis co directed the 1988 Pan Dora expedition that built a 12 foot memorial at Barrow Alaska honoring Will Rogers and Wiley Post with motion pictures and curios. Curtis will discuss Arctic adventures and bring Eskimo artifacts to the Lions Club luncheon following the talk.

Postal receipts rise ten percent from 1939 to 1940

Local Post Office receipts for January through November 1940 total $15,123.22, up from $13,813.33 in the same period of 1939. Postmaster J. R. Eanes reports a $1,309.89 increase, representing a ten percent rise for the year.
