Shoppers face lively week as the Christmas pilgrimage returns with a lighted display and open public events. Stores offer special one day sales with bargains across departments and a midweek drawing on Wednesday afternoon. Local Chamber leads the festive setup with the Oak Tree display drawing crowds.
Dr A J Gray a longtime Comanche physician born 1862 in Arkansas celebrated his 90th birthday on November 20 at his daughter Mrs Tom Dudley’s home. He began teaching, studied at Tulane, moved to Comanche in 1900, and cared for over 3000 babies while shaping regional medical practice.
Kerrville defeated Lampasas rivals to reach the bi-district final while Eagles and district foes prepared for the regional showdown. Kerrville’s center Gene played outstanding defense and scoring as the team edged past a trial lineup to secure the advancing spot.
Marriages recorded Cecil Clyde Flowers and Opal Bernice Gotcher on November 24 at Brady Methodist Church. Births list several new babies born at Blackwood Hospital, including Phillip Eugene Seay and Peggy Dean McEwin. Court results include State v Bruce Cole for swindling with worthless checks and appeals court upholding convictions for Louis J. Gifford and Wylie Braswell with fines and jail terms.
Comanche hosts Youth Revival at Victory Baptist Church December 5 to 7 with Rodney Irby of De Leon preaching at 7 30 pm nightly. The Comanche High School Band and Choral Club perform with Christmas songs and Ramblin Texans. Santa Day December 12 features free gifts and candy for kids, a free picture show, and radio entertainment as part of the Goodwill Day series with $150 drawn for the weekly prize.
Roscoe Edwards 68 lifelong Comanche resident was found dead in his chicken yard Monday December 1 shortly after leaving home to tend his flock. He died of heart failure following a September attack and had been in poor health for over a year. Funeral services were at Comanche Funeral Home with Rev. Frank Gilham and Rev. A. M. Stone officiating. interment in Oakwood Cemetery. Survivors include children Bryan Edwards San Angelo and Mrs. Sam Norris Comanche and Mrs. Sam Phifer Comanche, plus Celeste Hodes Edwards with whom he lived and their children Weldon R L Nelmar Ray, nine grandchildren, two brothers Bob Elgin Jess Comanche, and sister Mrs Roy Rains Comanche. He was a So of John Bradford Edwards and Rosetta Kidwell Edwards born May 5 1884 in Wise County and was a Baptist from Rock Church near Blanket.
The Comanche Chamber of Commerce and Garden Club sponsor a community Christmas lighting contest with cash prizes for four Girl Scout groups decorating courthouse grounds and for business houses yard entries. First prize 10 dollars, second 5. Entries due by December 10. judging on December 12 by out of town judges.
In a cooperative effort, Comanche Goodwill Days and Clay Building Material offer hog sheep and goat fencing at $10 per roll next Wednesday only. The Chamber of Commerce and Comanche Garden Club sponsor an outside Christmas decoration campaign with cash prizes for Comanche homes. judging occurs next Thursday night.
Mrs Mary Mollie Jane Gore 72 widow of D L Gore of 307 N Pine St died Monday after an extended illness Funeral services were held Tuesday at Comanche Funeral Home with Rev J D Smoot in charge Interment in Oakwood Cemetery She was born April 11 1880 in Comanche County daughter of the late William T Roberson and Margaret Ann Harris Roberson formerly Mary Mollie Jane Roberson
Comanche’s boys and girls basketball squads will compete in the Bangs Basketball Tournament starting this Thursday in Bangs. The event gathers teams from area districts for a two day format with emphasis on school pride and competitive play.
Mr. and Mrs. John M. Sharp of Louisiana and Mr. and Mrs. Archie Carmichael with son Fain of San Angelo visited their parents Mr. and Mrs D. F. Carmichael during the holiday period.
A Comanche woman, previously married to D L Gore, died January 28 1950. She leaves a daughter Bertha Stevens of Fort Worth two brothers Walter Roberson and Frank Roberson a sister Mrs Walter Lane four grandchildren and two great grandchildren and other relatives. She joined the Baptist Church in early life and remained a member until death.
Gustine Tigers host Lockett in Indian Memorial Stadium Comanche Friday night for the regional six man football title. Kickoff at 7 30. Gustine coming off bi district win over Palmer 42 14 and aiming for best performance of the season.
