School opens August 29 at 8 30 with expected enrollment around 1150, possible rise as 50 new students enrolled recently. Improvements include playground equipment at the elementary, new athletic facilities at the high school, a new transportation garage, and two new vocational programs Auto Mechanics and Vocational Office Education.
The Comanche County 220th District Court grand jury met for a one day session on August 18 and returned seventeen felony indictments. Five involve illegal voting tied to a February wet dry election in Justice Precinct No 4 at Proctor. Other counts cite thefts, aggravated assault, and hindering secured creditors. identifications withheld pending arrests.
Comanche fans will see three games as the Indians host Stephenville in a Friday scrimmage. Freshmen start at 5:00, juniors 6:30, with the varsity at 8:00 in the new stadium. Coach West calls Stephenville a strong, physical rival led by QB Mark Manley.
The Comanche area saw heavy weekend rains up to 2.75 inches, with lighter amounts elsewhere. Some communities had little or no rain, stopping Milo harvesting and leaving dryland peanuts fair to good while irrigated peanuts show excellent condition as livestock pasture quality varies with moisture and heat.
The Comanche School Board adopted the 1977 78 budget at a public hearing on August 18. Expenditures total 1 321 652 with revenue 1 320 643. Local sources fund 43 percent while State sources provide 789 069 based on ADA.
Three Naval F4 aircraft thrilled about 5 000 spectators at the eighth annual Comanche Air Show held at the Comanche County City Airport. Despite intermittent showers, demonstrations continued with RC models, six Huey helicopters from Fort Hood, a OV-10 Mohawk, skydives, and a P 38 Lightning flyover.
State Comptroller Bob Bullock announced that Texas businesses posted 33.8 billion dollars in gross sales for January through March 1977, a 19.4 percent rise from the prior year. Out-of-state firms added 3 billion in Texas sales, with counts from 233,000 permits and a lengthy county-by-county breakdown of gross sales and taxable figures.
Gustine Independent School District started classes on Monday August 22 with 160 students enrolled on opening day and more expected in the coming days. The district lists a full slate of teachers including Kathy Kelly Hallie Harrison Ben Carroll Gerry Draper Betsy Marwitz Vallie Thedford Vernon Smith and others. bus staff include Butch Stateville Joe Wiley Charles Koch and Vernon Smith. lunch cooks Wenona Westfall Venita McCarty and more.
Superintendent James Perkins says De Leon School will start Thursday August 25 if repairs to fire damaged rooms finish on time. Faculty orientation and registrations occurred this week with junior senior and freshman sophomore sessions and new seventh through twelfth grade students registering. Frances Fields joins as a new sixth grade faculty member.
Schools provide free or reduced priced meals to students meeting income criteria. Families of three with income up to 6390 may qualify for free lunches and up to 9970 for reduced price meals. Parents should contact the lunchroom supervisor or principal to apply. Appeals may be made to H. R. Jefferies, School Superintendent. No discrimination based on race, sex, color, or national origin.
Lion President Frank Hall invites the community to a BBQ chicken supper this Friday during football scrimmages with Stephenville. Meals run 5:30 to 8:30 under the bleachers with proceeds funding two press boxes for the new stadium. Tickets cost 2.75 for adults and 2.00 for children, available from Lions members or at the game.
Enrollment of about 1500 students was expected Wednesday when Sidney Independent School District classes started after two days of teacher in service. Superintendent D. C. Andrews leads the district. Returning staff include Wanona Pinkard principal Kathy Coleman Rhonda Lewis Lorri Shelton Jim Ball and coach John Dankworth. New teachers are Kay Ward Mary Ann Powers Alice Melton and Lupe Gutierrez. Doyle Morrison will substitute for Carol Lee Merworth for the first six weeks.
The 1978 Comanche County Commercial Steer Feeding Program starts Saturday August 27 1977 with weigh-in at the County Livestock Center from 9 00 to 12 00. Steers must weigh 400 to 600 pounds be dehorned and castrated and pass a committee including Daymond Power William Fair and Russell Hayes. Superintendent Daymond Power notes the Junior Livestock Show January 19 20 1978 with Larry Bunting and Charles Weidner as assistants.
