Comanche County Livestock Men Hold Annual Barbecue

The Comanche County Livestock Association’s annual meeting and barbecue drew more than 250 raisers at Lake Eanes Park. Officers were re-elected with no opposition, including President C M Caraway and Secretary Jim Banes. Directors and guest speakers from Fort Worth and San Angelo spoke on rural school aid, meat marketing, and livestock operations amidst ongoing war.

Gustine Schools Open Monday for New Term

Gustine Public Schools start Monday August 17 with 11 teachers and about 300 students expected. Worth Eargle will be Gustine High principal, replacing D A Swope who moves to Comanche to coach. The district will recess during peanut harvest to ensure labor.

Dry Cleaners To Reopen Monday After Vacation

The Chief Dry Cleaners will reopen Monday August 17 after a vacation enjoyed by Mr and Mrs Boyce Briscoe. They said business has been unusually heavy this year and wartime conditions made staffing hard, so they took a rest visiting relatives at Swenson. They will be back ready for business.

Missing In Action PFC Joseph J Johnson 26 Comanche

Private First Class Joseph J Johnson, 26, son of Mrs Leona Soward of Comanche, is listed as missing in action after serving as a gun mechanic in the air squadron in the Philippines. He entered the Army in 1940 and was a 1936 Comanche High School graduate. The War Department says he is missing from the surrender date May 7 1942 until further notice.

Cunningham Reunion Set for August 15 16 in County

The Cunningham Reunion will be held Saturday and Sunday August 15 and 16. It has run for over 40 years and sparked many county reunions making the area first in Texas for number of gatherings. War interrupted some events this year. Next week the paper plans to publish all county reunion write-ups and asks locals to submit theirs.

Defense Pictures Shown At Comanche High School

Interesting and instructional pictures will be shown by Texas Ranger W. E. Naylor on the civil protection training program at the Comanche High School Auditorium on Tuesday night August 25. These films should be attended by every Air Raid Warden in the county and as many other civil defense workers in the Comanche area as possible. The films are free and the public is invited.

Fount Wood of White Point Farner has been appointed a coast guard for the Government at Port Arthur. He passed the physical exam and left Saturday to report for duty.

Scrap Metal Drive Progressing in Comanche County

The WPA scrap metal drive to aid the war effort is developing nicely in Comanche County but needs more participation. County Chairman C. F. on urges readiness of WPA trucks to collect scrap metal rubber and salvage from any city or rural home and asks residents to notify Mr Denny County Judge H H Lockridge or any county official if trucks have not yet visited.

Comanche Reports 1941 City Tax Collection Exceeds 91 Percent

City Secretary Hardie Jones says 1941 Comanche taxes collected total $23,196.98 with $21,287.96 paid and $1,909.02 delinquent. Delinquent taxes paid in the last year amount to $3,980.37, closing the year at full collection. Mayor W. C. House adds the city follows a pay as you go policy with no new debts and bonds being paid as they mature.

Record of Comanche Independent School tax collection

Nearly 92 percent of the 1941 school taxes for the Comanche Independent School District have been paid. Taxes assessed were 17,585.19 with 16,087.36 paid leaving 1,497.83 delinquent. Delinquent taxes collected in the last 12 months totaled 3,626.79, bringing total school taxes collected to 19,714.62.

Phonograph Records Wanted to Aid Soldiers

Allison Named New CHS Vocational Agriculture Teacher

A. L. Allison a 1933 A&M College of Texas graduate was elected as Comanche High School Vocational Agriculture instructor. Reared in Erath County he taught in Wise County before and after serving with the Farm Security Administration. Married with a two year old daughter he was in Comanche Tuesday seeking a residence.

83.5 Percent of 1941 County Taxes Paid on August 1

Eighty three and one half per cent of the 1941 Comanche County taxes had been paid by August 1 per P A Pettit Tax Assessor-Collector. Total county taxes assessed were 112 946 26 with 103 961 33 paid and 8984 93 delinquent including 6369 09 on real estate and 2615 84 on personal property The note excludes state taxes which share the same percentage paid.

J S Walker Dies at 76 Longtime Sidney Resident

J S Walker 76 longtime Sidney resident died Wednesday after a yearlong illness. Funeral services were held at Pendergrass Cemetery in Sidney with R C Ledbetter of Comanche Church of Christ officiating. Interment followed. Survived by wife Hallie May Merrett, a daughter Mrs Jack Hendrix, and son Romeo Walker of Austin. Born February 8 1866 in Claiborne Parish Louisiana he moved to Texas in 1898 settling in Comanche County. Pallbearers named Loran Armstrong Ottie Cox Carl Walker Jack Hendrix Jr and Horce Perkins.

Five Hundred Dollar Domino Parlors License

Comanche City Council approved an ordinance to charge a $500 annual license fee for all domino parlors and domino walls in Comanche, replacing the previous $12 yearly rate. The higher fee takes effect this week.
