John Travis Mohon son of John A Mohon of Comanche has been promoted from sergeant to second lieutenant in North Africa. He has served in the Army for almost five years since enlisting in September 1937 and attended John Tarleton College and the University of Texas.
The Rector Cunningham Post of the American Legion in Comanche Texas reports shipment of over 510000 free Chesterfield cigarettes to troops in the combat zone. A donation of 90000 cigarettes was arranged by Claude George of Comanche for morale. Clemens was a visitor in Fort Worth.
George Buckey is promoted to major and awarded the Flying Cross the Air Medal and Oak Clusters for distinguished service in raids over France Germany and the Low Countries. Mrs Buckey and son George Richard reside with her parents Mr and Mrs Claude George at home.

He serves in the Ordance Division after duty at Texarkana and is married to a daughter Quay who stays with her parents in Austin. He previously managed Higginbotham's wholesale department before enlisting in January.

Ed Hicks son of Mr and Mrs Hicks of Comanche landed safely in England with Allied forces. A former Comanche High School student and 1938 Comanche Indians football team member he has served over a year and volunteered for overseas duty.
A War Department telegram informs Mr. and Mrs. C J Campbell of Lamkin that their son Flight Officer R Campbell was killed on July 10 in North Africa while serving with the Air Corps. The notice gives no death details but promises a full letter later. Campbell had completed schooling in 1937 and taught in Gustine Waelder and other communities before entering the Army N Y A program.
Numerous grass fires hit the county with nearly 1000 acres burned in Newburg Tater Hill area mainly harming Charlie Hicks and Sid Burton pastures. Max Keeter lost 60 acres of grass east of Comanche. several farmers suffered smaller losses. Comanche Fire Department fought fires and saved further losses. A tenant house at Oscar Callaway Ranch was destroyed two weeks earlier and two outbuildings later near Mercer Gap. cause of both fires was not determined.
The Knights of Pythias Lodge will hold an important meeting here Tuesday night. Mr. Evridge says several important matters require immediate attention and all members are urged to attend.
Sixty three of 130 poles consign ed to the Comanche REA were damaged Friday afternoon by fire. The poles rested on a flatcar near the depot on Santa Fe tracks. The Comanche Fire Department saved further damage as a heavy black smoke engulfed the area sparking town speculation on the blaze origin.
Explosion of an oil cook stove Tuesday afternoon damaged the interior of the kitchen at the Pinkie Gantz residence in Hast Comanche. Quick fire department response prevented further damage to the home.
Three Gustine servicemen Weldon McGinnis Tom Bolton and Bobby Green sent a joint letter from North Africa dated June 30 1943 to The Comanche Chief. They mention Cpl Red Colley and James Hughes and joke that it is a small world noting they read every line of the paper.
County officials with a search warrant searched Ed Steele’s residence in Comanche Tuesday for liquor but found none. They spotted an unusual spare tire on a nearby car and discovered about thirteen pints of whiskey hidden inside. Steele was arrested and charged with illegal possession of intoxicating liquor.
County officers arrested Bob Parker last week and filed burglary charges over breaking and entering the private garage of J A Barker in the Board Church community.
Dr. Geo W Truett will be heard over KBWD from 8 to 830 a.m. each Sunday for 13 consecutive Sundays. The announcement comes from Rev E G Gregory Jr pastor of the First Baptist Church of Comanche.
Pfc. Calvin C. Ross, son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Ress of 641 Dubbo Route 8, is overseas with the U S Air Forces in the South Pacific. Ross has served about eighteen months and is listed among servicemen during active duty. Rev A J Helm, former circuit pastor at Carlton Methodist, visited Comanche Tuesday.
An old fashioned dinner of fried chicken and sides will be served at noon Sunday in the church basement. Rev Hot and Rev LaPrade, now pastor of the First Methodist Church at Breckenridge, are noted in the notice.

Seaman Second Class Craig Barrett son of Rev and Mrs Gordon Barrett of Comanche is on duty with the Fleet somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. He notes little to write except the vast ocean after ten days at sea. In February Barrett worked at The Comanche Chief. Captain George R Buckey, husband of former Miss Maxine George of Comanche, promoted from captain to major in the Air Corps and has been overseas nearly two years.
In Comanche County twenty years ago, 115 descendants gathered at Indian Creek to celebrate Rev M O Coker, an early settler who started the local Methodist Church. The 1855 arrival marked him as a pioneer preacher in the area.
Comanche County reports 94.16 percent tax collection on the 1942 roll by July 1, the best in two decades. The 1942 roll totals $155,856.91 with $149,791.37 collected and delinquent taxes at $6,054.54. Delinquent state ad valorem $1,421.88, county ad valorem $2,370.18, and school taxes $2,363.49 remain unpaid.
