The Comanche festival begins with exhibits in the courthouse basement and a 6:30 PM coronation on the courthouse square. A parade, Peach Princess selection by drawing, and a full coronation ceremony with dignitaries, music, and a royal procession conclude the event with free admission.
Robert T Hill dies and his will directs his ashes to be scattered on Round Mountain near Comanche. Executors named in the will are away on vacation and will handle the matter when they return in a week or two, per J R Eanes in Dallas.
On Friday evening August 15 at 7 p.m. the Fruit and Melon Festival offers a free watermelon slicing on the square in Comanche. Prank Vineyard and committee arrange ice cold melons of top grade. merchants provide helpers to slice and serve on the sidewalk around the square.
A revival meeting opens tonight at 8 o'clock at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Rev. S. J. Isham will preach and invites the public to attend all services. Daily services are held twice, at 10:30 a.m. and 8 p.m.
The Comanche Chief will publish one day earlier than usual next week due to the Fruit and Melon Festival on August 14 and 15. The paper will reach subscribers on rural routes early Thursday morning. Merchants are urged to submit copy early for broad festival coverage.
Community booths and individual exhibits announce premiums for next week including baskets of peaches and watermelons. Exhibits list peach varieties and fruit weights with multiple prize levels and no entrance fee. crop entries cover corn oats millet barley wheat peas peanuts and cotton stalks with small cash awards.
Sixteen community queens named for Comanche Fruit and Watermelon Festival. Coronation ceremonies set for Thursday night August 14 at the Rodeo Arena. Chastine, an ex convict and parole violator, held in Austin, faces forging charges for passing a $30 check stamped Cogburn manager of Lightn ing C Ranch near Dublin. He bought $25 boots and got $5 change. boots recovered in Austin. Sheriff Wid Spivey reports.
Comanche County wheat growers may apply for 1942 Wheat Insurance, an all risk plan offered by the ACA. The 1941 harvest showed abnormally low yields due to excess moisture, and coverage extends to the 1942 crop. Insurers must file by noon August 30, 1941, with the Comanche County ACA office for explanations and enrollment.
Postmaster J. R. Eanes reports United States Defense Savings Bonds and Savings Stamps on sale at Comanche Post Office from May 1 1941. May June and July sales totaled 145 bonds worth 13018 75 and 280.95 in stamps with a mix of bond denominations and a $5000 per person yearly purchase limit.
Comanche Public Schools will start Monday September 8 as announced by superintendent W Z Compton. Three teaching positions remain to be filled including Band Director English and science. Pat Howard resigns as band director to join Texas Wesleyan College Fort Worth. Principal W W Logan resigns to lead Woodsboro schools. Transfers from Brysonville Mercer Gap Harmony Cross Roads Briar Grove Newburg Pettit Fairview and Van Dyke bring about fifteen additional high school students to Comanche.
Congressman Sam Russell of Texas Seventeenth District was designated Speaker of the House during the July 7 afternoon session. Though in his first term, he is praised as able and experienced in House procedure and presiding over legislative matters.
The Comanche baseball team meets Meridian Maulers tonight in Meridian with 8 o clock start. Meridian is a top local squad and the hosts present the toughest challenge this season as Comanche debuts its first night game under manager John Carpenter. Belve Bean and MacEwan Palmer will pitch.
Stacks of shining WPA canned goods fill the Comanche center as the agency prepares vegetables and fruits for next school year under the School Lunch Program. The Comanche County Electric Cooperative will hold its annual meeting and free barbecue at Lake Eanes Park on Saturday August 16 with members invited to bring dishes and prizes announced.
A WPA project in Comanche surrounds the new courthouse grounds. About 36 workers will be paid roughly 1 385.60 monthly for two months, totaling about 9 443.00. WPA contributes 7 277.00, Commissioners Court of Comanche County covers 2 156.00, and work includes curb and sidewalk removal and replacement, paving, and landscaping.
J. R. Biggs of Comanche is visiting his brother C. F. Biggs in Dallas this week.
The Comanche County Quartet Singing Convention will be held at Freewill Baptist Church tonight led by Charlie Mare shall of Van Dyke. The public is invited to attend. Mr. Marshall notes that Rev. J D Smoot preached at Hico Methodist Church last Sunday.
