Comanche Countians report varying rainfall from July 28 to August 1 with isolated 4 to 6 inch totals near Hasse White Point area and north of Comanche. Some regions remained dry while others showed green pastures and flooded fields. grass fires remained common where rain did not fall.
A 40 year old electrical system at the Comanche County Courthouse caused a Monday and Tuesday brownout amid extreme heat. Power checks found the issue in building circuits, with temporary repairs hoped for soon. Sheriff Garman's office ran on a temporary line and radio service was cut, while air conditioning and lights were reduced in several rooms. A domino hall outage drew a complainant unhappy that courthouse business paused for his game.
Gustine Public School students will start classes on Monday August 22 at 8 20 AM with an early closing at 2 30 PM. A list of ninety prospective jurors was summoned for 1:00 PM on Monday, August 8, for the 22nd District Court in Comanche County. District Clerk Ruth Page released names and addresses including Rowena Knudson of Comanche and Cullen Stephens Jr. of Dublin, among many others across De Leon Gustine Dublin Proctor and surrounding towns.
Indian Head football coach Fred West sets a full team meeting for Wednesday August 3 at 6 30 p m at the field house. He expects 70 to 80 boys to join high school football. Teams: varsity junior varsity and freshmen.
De Leon’s 63rd Annual Peach and Melon Festival runs through Saturday August 6 with Jill Miller named Queen on Monday night. First runner up Robin Hood and second runner up Melissa Millsap are noted. Little Miss De Leon is Angela Morris. Booth judging, a street parade, musical acts, tractor pull and fiddlers contest fill the week with a melon slicing on Saturday afternoon and nightly carnival at the festival grounds.
Jerome Hall, 29, elected assistant coach and biology teacher by the Comanche Independent School District Board on August 1 in a special meeting. He has six years of coaching, including Azle and Gainesville, and is a Fort Worth native.
Abilene duo Joe Hawkins and Reggie Howell captured the ninth annual August Partnership Tourney at PAR Country Club with rounds of 65 and 67 for a 132 total, tying the par 72 event record. The 222 golfers entered, with first place winners receiving Ben Hogan Director Irons, second place Hogan Woods, and Hogan golf balls awarded to top five finishers.
