Stokes and Hanson receive top national honors as America's Outstanding Young Farmers for the year. The program honors young men in the farming industry and highlights their contributions to communities and national agriculture.
Buster Hanson of De Leon was chosen as the Outstanding Conservation Farmer in Texas by the Texas Conservation Awards Program. He is also the Up Leon SWCD Outstanding Farmer and will be honored with his wife La Rue and their three children at a May 3 banquet at the TCU Student Center Ballroom in Fort Worth. He farms about 24,000 acres across several Texas counties, with the award recognizing efforts in the Upper Leon SWCD.
Anson Haley Ramsey, 59, of Hasse, died after his car stalled on a county road crossing near U S Highway 67-377 north and was hit by a Santa Fe freight. The crash occurred about 4 20 p m on April 4, Ramsey, a maintenance worker at the Comanche County Courthouse, died at Comanche Community Hospital. He was thrown from the vehicle as the train, moving about 50 mph, struck and pushed the car 80 feet. Ramsey had additional school system duties. Funeral services followed.
The Agri-Business Breakfast will be held at Golden Arrow Cafeteria on Thursday morning April 11 at 7:00 a.m. President Ray Rankin urges full attendance at the meeting.
The fourth annual Easter Sunrise Service will be held in Comanche on April 14 at 7 00 a.m. in Indian Memorial Stadium. Sponsored by the Comanche Jaycees. Rev James B Franklin lin, Interim Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Comanche, will lead. If weather is bad, services move to the First Baptist Church of Comanche.
Superintendent H R Jefferies said a break in at Junior High and Elementary School buildings was found late Sunday. Police investigated fires extinguishers discharged and supplies scattered while film reels were tossed and obscene words chalked on blackboards.
Superintendent D C Andrews announced Easter holidays will be Friday April 12 and Monday April 15. Classes resume regular hours Monday with 8 25 a m start and 3 30 p m dismissal to conform with other area schools.
A Sunday fire at Smith Memorial Nursing Home in Gustine forced the evacuation of 25 residents with no injuries reported. Firefighters from multiple towns battled the blaze as ambulances transported residents to nearby facilities. The building, leased to the city, was declared a total loss.
A 15 year old boy, Rocky Lynn Wilson of Stephenville, died after a car rolled end over end on State Highway 16 five and a half miles north of Comanche. The driver Ricky Mills, also 15 and from Stephenville, was in intensive care after surgery. Funeral services for Wilson were held at Lacy Oak Chapel in Stephenville.
