Ed Bynum, indicted in Comanche County two years ago on a liquor charge, was arrested Friday at Seymour and taken to the county jail by Sheriff Dwight Brightman. He was arrested at the request of Comanche officers. The arrest follows his prior indictment after discovery of a large still near White Point. he appeared for the grand jury and was bound over, but escaped before a new bond could be set for district court.
R W Higginbotham of Dallas died at his home on Thursday afternoon March 19 after a long career as president of Higginbotham Brothers and Company and head of several Texas firms. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 30 p m at his residence with interment at Crewe Hill Cemetery. He left a large family including three sons and four daughters and was active in multiple business ventures.
Lee Wallace, under indictment in Comanche County for alleged illegal disposition of mortgaged property, was arrested in Miles City, Montana last week and held there. Sheriff Dwight Brightman and County Attorney F. C. Jaye traveled to Austin to obtain extradition papers from the Governor and then headed to Montana to bring the prisoner back.
Q O Powell formerly of Brownwood bought a half interest in the Comanche bakery from J R Lowry and will co operate the business. Powell and Mrs Powell moved from Brownwood to Comanche Tuesday and took on duties Wednesday.
Mrs Kate Prude formerly of Comanche and long time Brownwood teacher was elected principal of Looney Ward School last week. The appointment adds to Brownwood district leadership as Prude brings classroom experience and regional ties.
KE L White of Fort Worth was arrested Friday in Comanche on a swindling charge. He was released Saturday on a $1500 bond after an aged couple paid more than $100 with a forged check. Relatives alerted authorities and White was nabbed while trying to cash the check at the Comanche bank. his outside accomplice fled.
Clarence Biggs has leased the garage and filling station formerly run by Doc Isham and will assume control of the business on Wednesday. He will keep a repair department in the rear of Brightman’s Service Station.
County Agent J. A. Barton says blackberries survived the cold with no damage after inspecting the Durham Brothers orchard. Grapes pecans and peaches suffered heavy losses while apples and plums apricots showed major reductions. Several growers including Charlie Denny Irvin Pinkard Avery Moore Less Dillard and EF Rauhut report near total fruit loss.
Walls boosters representing wholesalers and manufacturers tour Waco area and arrive in Comanche at 5 00 pm Monday April 6 on a Cotton Belt train for about an hour with Comanche business men per chamber notice.
At daybreak Saturday a fire destroyed the Tinney residence on the Babe Roberts farm with the building and contents a total loss. J A Tinney and family escaped with the children and Mrs Tinney as flames overtook the pasted walls. The blaze started in the stove or an incubator in use in the house according to Mr Tinney.
Ruling states that paying the City Poll Tax is not needed to vote in city elections. If a voter has paid State and County taxes, they may vote even without City Poll Tax, while nonpayment of State or County tax bars voting. The 19th Amendment is cited regarding women and the City Poll Tax.
On Comanche Route 5 R QO Edwards Mrs Ship Cames C G Harris and T C Freeman will receive a family pass to the Ritz on Monday April 6th.
T. J. Stark and Dan Rush of Hasse were arrested Monday and brought to Comanche where statutory charges were filed. After an examining trial they were released on bond.
Voters go to the polls Tuesday April 7 for the city election with contests for City Secretary and City Marshall. The official ballot lists J R Eanes for Mayor two aldermen J H Nie and Gail Dudley for Aldermen A G Miller and J C Cunningham for City Marshall and Bob McCampbell for City Attorney. School trustee elections occur countywide on Saturday April and include a county trustee and three seats in the District as noted.
The world's largest watermelon, weighing 164.75 pounds, was grown near Hope Arkansas last year by O. D. Middlebrook, nephew of the late Co. A. and J. H. Deller of Comanche. A pamphlet received by Middlebrook's cousin Rube Dudley states the record. The third largest watermelon was also raised at Hope by H. S. Dudley, another nephew of Mr Dudley.
J. B. Layne of Van Dyke was named a member of the Historical Committee of the Texas Agricultural Workers Association of Dallas. He will collect data on Texas agricultural history and receive materials on agricultural social and economic development. Other committee members include T. Richardson of Dallas chairman Mrs Phoebe K Warner of Glen Dallas Victor Schoffelmeyer of Duslas Exmere Butler of Dallas and J J Stanford of Bryan.
