Stevens County Fair Opens With Parade and Big Exhibits
The ninth annual Stevens County Livestock and Fair Association opened with a Main street parade led by grand marshal M A Daggy and the Colville band. Princess Amatap Nina Selle rode with attendants from surrounding towns, as six Northwest Indian tribes paraded. At the fair grounds the grounds were enlarged, grandstand doubled, and crowds enjoyed races, the Indian village, fruit and agricultural displays, and booths from local granges, schools, and businesses.

County Farm Bureau Names New Secretary
D. H. Ulrich was named secretary of Stevens County Farm Bureau and assumed duties Monday. He will run the headquarters in the building opposite the courthouse, succeeding C. H. Gerking of Meyers Falls who resigned to devote time to the Meyers Falls fruit growers organization. Ulrich is an experienced accountant, strong public speaker, practical farmer, and aims to dedicate full time to county work.

Funeral Services for Former Colville Teacher
The funeral for Mrs. Louis A. Wernl who died September 22 from burns was held at McCord Undertaking Parlors. The PEO chapter president, Rev. J. M. Huggins, and Colville High School seniors attended, with a large floral showing. Burial followed at Rose Hill mausoleum in Bellingham.

Chloride Queen Mine Strikes Rich Galena Ore Body
The Chloride Queen mine on Clugston creek reports a rich galena vein found 800 feet from tunnel mouth at 1300 feet depth. Samples yield 56 dollars in silver and 30 dollars in lead per ton. The plan is to extend 600 feet deeper, block out the ore, and potentially ship from the western portal. A concentrator costing 25 to 35 thousand dollars is expected to be built next spring, with a 10 year ore run anticipated. The company funds winter development to fully exploit the property.

Mrs. P. G. Hobbs Dies in Colville at 72
Rebecca Mannon Hobbs born April 18 1850 in Mer cer county Illinois married P G Hobbs January 28 1866 in Omaha Missouri. She lived in Colville since 1908 and leaves seven children Henry Hobbs J R Montange Ed F Hobbs Jesse E Hobbs Ruby Jamieson Lloyd G Hobbs and J R Bagby plus a brother J M Mannon. She had been ill long and bedfast since June 12 and was totally blind for ten years before sight briefly returned after an operation.

A new community church formed in Marcus by members of all denominations. Dean Severance and Rev. T A Daughters of the Episcopal church attended the organization and offered aid. Stevens County Valuation Cut Over a Million in 1928
The state board of equalization fixes Stevens county assessments at 39 percent of actual value averaging 89 percent of true value. This raises railroad tax base by about 41000 while lowering overall county valuation by over one million from 1921 levels. Assessor Wiley reduced unimproved land values by about 20 percent including magnesite land at Chewelah and Northport smelter property. By next week state payment totals will be set and the 1928 ratio will be computed.
